Google has agreed to pay $10 million for the digital remains of Spirit Airlines, and the shopping list is stranger than the price tag. The package includes roughly 100 million company emails spread across 80,000 accounts, 500 million Microsoft Teams messages, about 30 million lines of code, and more than 175,000 employee records with a system of record running back to August 1986. Judge Sean Lane was set to consider the sale in the US Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York on Wednesday morning.Spirit stopped flying on May 2, midway through its second Chapter 11 in two years, having filed with around $8.1 billion in debt and laid off roughly 17,000 people. What survives is an archive, and the auction for it was competitive. Google opened at $5 million. AI data company Mercor countered at $5.2 million, then offered $7 million if it could take the raw data first and anonymise it in-house. Google closed at $10 million. Mercor sits as backup buyer at $7.5 million.
Why a dead airline’s inbox is worth more than the open web
The value here is not text to pretrain on. Model builders have largely exhausted the public internet. What they cannot scrape is a chain of consequence: a support ticket, the arguments about it, the commit that followed, the review thread, the operational result. Spirit’s records link all of it. Court filings list 516 repositories, 372,585 commits and 43,170 pull requests sitting alongside 667,563 IT tickets, 763,391 flights and more than 7.5 billion passenger transactions going back to 2008. That is the raw material AI agents need to learn multi-step work, and it does not exist on the open web in that shape.Google has aviation reasons too. Google Cloud signed a five-year partnership with Ryanair on August 12 covering fleet operations and maintenance scheduling. Meta tried gathering comparable workflow data from living staff by tracking keystrokes and mouse movements, then paused the programme after an internal backlash. A bankrupt estate has nobody left to object.
What Google’s promise to scrub personal data actually says
Google says it will not receive personal information, and that everything will be “rigorously scrubbed of any personally identifiable information by a third party before receipt”. The exclusions are real: 97.5 million passenger profiles, 50.2 million Free Spirit loyalty records and tens of millions of call recordings stay out.The August 14 sale agreement adds detail nobody quoted. The third party must be acceptable to or designated by the buyer. Google pays for the work, and those costs do not reduce the $10 million. Google also gets to review and comment on the process. The certification must hold while preserving referential integrity, meaning the joins between records survive by design. One pseudonymous person still runs from an email to a ticket to a payroll entry.The estate also kept the right to sell its customer list separately to travel and hospitality buyers. Around 17,000 former staff, meanwhile, signed employment contracts, not data licences.
