YouTube changes what counts as a view from August 24; creators may suddenly see bigger numbers
YouTube is about to make its view counter a lot more generous. Starting August 24, a view will be logged the moment a video begins to play, from the very first frame, and the standard will apply globally across every format on the platform. The company confirmed the change in a post on its Community forum, and the practical effect is simple enough: the number under your video will climb faster than it used to, whether or not anyone actually stuck around.Until now, the bar was much higher. YouTube never officially spelled out its old method, but the widely accepted understanding was that a standard video needed roughly 30 seconds of watch time before a view registered. Shorts moved to the instant-count model last year, and YouTube says it is now aligning everything else to that same standard for consistency across the platform. TikTok and Instagram already count views the same way, while X waits about two seconds.
Why YouTube says creators asked for this view counting change
YouTube’s explanation is that it has been running multiple view counting systems across different formats, and that creators wanted the metric confusion cleared up so they could understand their true exposure. The company frames the bigger numbers as a selling point, saying metric parity makes it easier for creators to confidently express their scale and value to brand partners and sponsors.The old number is not disappearing. It moves to YouTube Analytics under Advanced Mode as “Engaged views,” where creators can still see how many people chose to keep watching. That is now the more honest signal, and advertisers will likely learn to ask for it. Not everyone is convinced. One creator in the announcement thread argued the new figure tells them nothing and affects nothing, so why add another number at all.
No change to YouTube monetisation or YPP eligibility
Earnings are untouched. Payouts continue to run on “Engaged Shorts views” and “Engaged Watch Hours,” both visible in Advanced Mode. YouTube Partner Program entry requirements are unchanged too, though the terminology shifts to “qualified Shorts views” and “qualified watch hours,” replacing the older “valid public” phrasing.The timing is awkward. The view change lands a week after YouTube raised the bar for new creators hoping to earn from ads and subscriptions next year, moving the requirement to 8,000 qualified watch hours in a year or 20 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days. Bigger numbers on the front end, harder entry at the back.
