Google Doodle celebrates Independence Day 2026 with 22 diverse textiles

Google is commemorating India’s 80th Independence Day with a refreshed, vibrant Doodle showcasing the country’s rich heritage through 22 distinct regional textile traditions. The artwork, originally designed by New Delhi-based graphic designer and artist Namrata Kumar for the 77th Independence Day in 2023, has returned this year, showcasing intricate digital patchwork of handcrafted fabrics. Illustrated by Kumar, an alumnus of the Srishti School of Art, Design and Technology, the digital tapestry celebrates the collective labor of weavers, dyers, cultivators and block-printers across the country.The illustration showcased on Google Doodles highlights several historic textile traditions, including Jamdani Weaves which is fine muslin fabric patterned with geometric and floral motifs; Ikat & Ajrakh which are resist-dyed Ikat weaves alongside heritage Ajrakh geometric block-printing using natural mineral and vegetable dyes as well as Benarasi Brocade, woven silk with gold and silver metallic threads.

Theme of India’s 80th Independence Day: ‘Yuva Shakti‘

The digital homage coincides with nationwide Independence Day celebrations marking eight decades of self-governance. Alongside national flag-hoisting ceremonies, the 2026 observances spotlight the central theme of ‘Yuva Shakti’ (Youth Power) for Viksit Bharat@2047′. This year’s celebrations will also honour 150 years of Vande Mataram
