RG Kar rape-murder case: How mobile trail led Bengal cops to ex-TMC MLA Nirmal Ghosh in Odisha hotel
BALASORE: Former Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA Nirmal Ghosh was arrested by West Bengal Police from a hotel near National Highway 16 in the Simulia area of Balasore district on Thursday in connection with a fresh case linked to the August 2024 rape-murder at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.According to police, Ghosh was traced through mobile surveillance and apprehended from Odishi Hotel in Simulia. He was subsequently taken to Simulia police station by a team from the Barrackpore Police Commissionerate.DIG (Eastern Range) Pinak Mishra said, “Nirmal Ghosh, former TMC MLA from Panihati in North 24 Parganas, West Bengal, has been brought to Simulia police station by West Bengal Police. This is in connection with the RG Kar Medical College case. He was staying at Odishi Hotel in Simulia. Balasore Police is extending all necessary support to West Bengal Police in the matter.”Ghosh is being taken to West Bengal by road and is expected to be produced before a court in Barrackpore.The arrest follows a fresh FIR registered at Khardah police station on a complaint filed by the father of the RG Kar victim. Ghosh and two others have allegedly been accused of destruction of evidence, criminal conspiracy, and forcing a person to act against his or her will.The allegations relate to the circumstances surrounding the victim’s cremation following the August 2024 incident. The accused are alleged to have used their political influence to pressure the bereaved family into carrying out a hurried cremation, allegedly with the intention of suppressing evidence and preventing a second autopsy.
