The Gates Foundation has announced a $540 million grant to the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) at the University of Washington, marking one of its biggest investments in health research. As reported by Fortune, the 10-year funding will help expand global health data and research used by governments and policymakers to respond to disease outbreaks and improve healthcare. The donations come as the US government continues to reduce funding for scientific research, public health, education and other programmes, the report says, adding that the billionaire philanthropy is increasingly filling gaps left by federal funding cuts in the US.

Gates Foundation’s $540 million grant will allow IHME to expand its Global Burden of Disease study, which measures diseases, injuries and health risks across the world. According to the foundation, the project will increase its coverage from about 925 locations to nearly 5,000, giving governments and researchers more detailed local health data to support policy decisions.“Reliable and independent evidence can mean the difference between reacting to a health crisis after it has taken hold and acting early enough to change its course,” said Dr. Christopher J.L. Murray, IHME director and professor of health metrics sciences.“This investment will allow us to provide high-quality evidence at a much more local level and help leaders understand not only where health is improving or worsening, but which decisions can make the greatest difference for people,” he added.
Long partnership between Gates Foundation and IHME
The latest funding builds on a long relationship between the Gates Foundation and IHME. The foundation provided the original funding to establish the research institute at the University of Washington in 2007.
