'India showing interest': Putin on Northern Sea Route; why it matters
Putin said Russia was seeing increased interest from partner countries, including India and China

India is among the key countries showing growing interest in cooperation with Russia on the Northern Sea Route (NSR), Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Wednesday.Putin’s remarks come as Russia looks to expand the commercial potential of the route amid Western sanctions and growing geopolitical competition in the Arctic. He said Russia was seeing increased interest from partner countries, including India and China, while stressing that cooperation would be carried out within the framework of international maritime law.“Although Russia has consistently voiced, and continues to reaffirm, its readiness to cooperate and leverage the advantages of the Northern Sea Route, strictly within the bounds of existing international maritime law. We see growing interest from countries wishing to engage with us on this front. These partners include, above all, our friends China, India, and other nations who are actively discussing these matters with us,” Putin said. What is the Northern Sea RouteThe Northern Sea Route runs along Russia’s Arctic coast, connecting the Atlantic and Pacific oceans through the Arctic Ocean. It offers a significantly shorter maritime link between Europe and Asia than the traditional Suez Canal route, potentially cutting travel time by around 10-14 days. The route has gained importance as the Arctic ice cover continues to decline, making navigation possible for longer periods. However, harsh weather conditions, limited infrastructure and the availability of ice-class vessels remain major challenges to its wider commercial use.An analysis by the Observer Research Foundation (ORF) said Russia is seeking partners to develop the route because its Arctic coast lacks adequate ports and connectivity infrastructure linking the region with the country’s industrial and commercial centres. India and China, as major buyers of Russian energy, are well placed to participate in the development and operationalisation of the NSR.‘Artificial tensions in Arctic’The route has a wider geopolitical significance for both Moscow and New Delhi. ORF said Russia sees value in involving India as it seeks to balance China’s growing economic footprint in the Russian Far East.Putin, meanwhile, warned of rising “artificial tensions” in the Arctic, linking the situation to wider geopolitical developments and NATO expansion. He reiterated that Moscow remained ready to work with international partners on the NSR within existing maritime law.His comments came alongside a separate warning that Russia would respond “in kind” if European countries confiscated Russian merchant ships, calling any such move “piracy and banditry” amid the EU’s efforts to target Moscow’s so-called shadow fleet.
