Speeding BMW runs over woman in Delhi, villagers block road near T-3 terminal | Delhi News
NEW DELHI: A 48-year-old woman was killed after she was allegedly hit by a speeding BMW while crossing a road at a zebra crossing in Delhi’s Mehram Nagar on Tuesday afternoon, police said. The driver of the car has been apprehended.The deceased was identified as Jaiwanti, a resident of East Mehram Nagar who worked as a domestic help. The accident took place around noon when she was crossing the road to return home for lunch. The impact was severe and she died on the spot, police said.According to police, a PCR call was received about a car hitting a woman. A police team reached the spot and found that Jaiwanti had been shifted to DDU Hospital, where doctors declared her dead.The BMW driver was identified as 38-year-old Deepak, a resident of Pratap Nagar in Mandoli. Police said he had been working as a driver for the past six months and was returning alone from the airport when the accident occurred.“We have apprehended the driver and further investigation is in progress,” a police official said.A case has been registered and legal action initiated.The accident triggered protests by local residents, who gathered at the spot and blocked the road, disrupting traffic movement. Heavy police deployment, including paramilitary personnel, was made to maintain law and order.Jaiwanti’s family alleged that the driver fled the spot after hitting her.Her daughter-in-law said the family rushed to the accident site after receiving information and found Jaiwanti lying on the road. Her husband took her to the hospital and informed police.“We want justice for her,” she said, adding that Jaiwanti had been supporting the family after her son died around five years ago.Jaiwanti’s daughter also alleged that the driver fled after the accident.“We wanted to meet him and ask him why he was driving so fast and why he did not slow down while passing through the area. If he had been driving carefully and at a controlled speed, perhaps this tragedy could have been avoided,” she said.The woman’s son alleged that the stretch had witnessed several accidents in the past and said residents had repeatedly raised concerns over speeding vehicles.“Many of us have complained to authorities about the need for a speed breaker or traffic signals because vehicles often pass through this stretch at high speed,” he said.He also alleged that the driver could have taken Jaiwanti to a nearby hospital or called for medical assistance immediately after the accident.“Had my mother received timely treatment, her life might have been saved. Instead, she was left bleeding on the road. We want strict action against the driver and justice for my mother,” he said.The accident and subsequent protest affected traffic movement near Terminal 3 of Indira Gandhi International Airport and adjoining areas.Delhi Traffic Police said the stretch between NSG Red Light and T-3 was closed due to an obstruction caused by local villagers following the fatal accident. Commuters were advised to take alternative routes.
