Six days after Google announced that Sir Demis Hassabis was stepping down as CEO of Google DeepMind, the story that has stuck is not the one Google wrote. It is the one circulating through investor group chats and London AI circles: that Hassabis wanted out entirely, at the same moment Jeff Dean walked, and was talked into a chairmanship instead. The claim originates with the Pathfounders newsletter, which reported on August 8 that industry sources believe Hassabis intended to exit alongside Dean, and that Google management feared the twin departure would gut the share price.Google has not addressed the report. What Hassabis has done, three days ago, is post a note on LinkedIn that reads like a man closing a chapter on his own terms. It restates the AGI framing from his internal memo almost word for word, points readers to the company blog, and says nothing about why the timing landed on a Wednesday evening in London, minutes before Dean’s announcement broke.

The official version is straightforward enough. Hassabis becomes Chair of Google DeepMind and Chief Scientist of Alphabet, keeping his role at Isomorphic Labs. Koray Kavukcuoglu, DeepMind’s CTO for years and now based in Mountain View, takes over day-to-day operations as SVP, reporting directly to Sundar Pichai. Notably, Google did not appoint a new DeepMind CEO at all. Minutes after the memo landed, Dean, employee number 30 and a 27-year veteran, said he was leaving with Sanjay Ghemawat, Oriol Vinyals and Quoc Le to start Discovery Loop, a public benefit corporation Google will fund as founding investor and cloud partner. Alphabet stock fell around 5 per cent.

Deepmind’s London-to-Mountain View shift nobody at Google will confirm
The Financial Times reported on August 6 that the reorganisation moves control of Google’s AI effort from London back to Silicon Valley, and cements the returning influence of co-founder Sergey Brin, who now sits near Kavukcuoglu’s desk. The FT also reported that senior executives had grown frustrated with what they saw as Hassabis’s lighter focus on commercial demands, and that his decision to release AlphaFold freely became a point of internal friction. A person close to the company disputed that any tension existed. A Google spokesperson separately denied that power was moving west, noting Hassabis and much of the leadership remain in London at the new Platform 37 offices.
The Gemini delays sitting underneath all of it
Fortune’s reporting on August 10, based on three current and one former DeepMind employee, fills in the harder texture. Gemini 3.5 Pro, unveiled at I/O in May with a promise to ship the following month, has missed three deadlines. Engineers blame a decision last summer to deprioritise coding while Anthropic and OpenAI ran ahead on agentic tools. Staff described 60-hour weeks, burnout, and a leadership vacuum in which Brin was visible on the floor and Hassabis was not. June alone took Gemini co-lead Noam Shazeer to OpenAI and AlphaFold co-inventor John Jumper to Anthropic.
