Glorya Kaufman, the philanthropist who played a significant role in shaping Los Angeles’ performing arts landscape, left behind a legacy that extended far beyond her vast wealth. Now, her longtime Beverly Hills estate, known as Chateau de Liberte, has gone on the market for $25 million, with the proceeds set to benefit the Glorya Kaufman Foundation.

Kaufman and her late husband, Donald Bruce Kaufman, built their fortune through the Fortune 500 homebuilding company Kaufman & Broad, now known as KB Home. She later channelled much of her wealth into supporting dance, education and the arts.In 2009, Kaufman donated $20 million to the Music Center to fund performances by leading international dance companies, including American Ballet Theatre. At the time, it was the largest individual donation to dance in Los Angeles history.In 2012, she fully endowed the USC Glorya Kaufman School of Dance. Three years later, the school opened its International Dance Center.“Glorya was a visionary in every way, particularly in recognizing the profound impact that dance brings to people’s lives daily,” USC Kaufman dean Julia M. Ritter said following Kaufman’s death. “Her generosity was truly life-changing for so many.”Kaufman died in August 2025 at the age of 95.

The European-inspired Beverly Hills estate, dubbed Chateau de Liberte or “Castle of Freedom,” is now being offered for $25 million. According to Robb Report, Rachelle Rosten and Kelly deLaat of Douglas Elliman are handling the listing.The proceeds from the sale will go to the Glorya Kaufman Foundation, continuing the philanthropist’s commitment to arts, education and community institutions.Kaufman purchased the property in 2012 for $18.2 million after downsizing from her family ranch in Brentwood’s Mandeville Canyon. She renamed the estate Chateau de Liberté and transformed it into a personal retreat reflecting her life as a philanthropist.She also customised the interiors to accommodate her extensive collection of fine art and furniture. Several pieces from the collection were recently featured in a sale conducted by Abell Auction Company.
Inside Chateau de Liberte
Designed by architect Richard Landry and built by John Finton, the property was completed in the late 1980s.A gated entrance leads to a roughly 700-foot-long driveway lined with sculptures before opening onto a cobblestone motor court. An arched entryway leads into the grand foyer, where limestone floors extend into an expansive living room.
