Ten-year-old Herbie Martin IV from Maryland has turned a late-night baking effort into a remarkable achievement after his lemon blueberry buttercream cake sold for $15,000 at the Carroll County 4-H and FFA Fair’s charity cake auction. According to The Baltimore Sun, Martin stayed up until 2 a.m. perfecting the cake before it went on to become the auction’s top-selling entry. The annual auction raised more than $100,000 this year, with proceeds supporting future Carroll County 4-H and FFA fairs and related programmes.

A late-night baking effort

Martin, who participated through the Cheetah’s 4-H Club, put considerable effort into preparing his entry. His cake was a lemon blueberry buttercream creation decorated with white icing and piped yellow and purple designs. The young baker’s path to the winning cake was not completely smooth. According to The Baltimore Sun, Martin said the first attempt did not turn out as expected because the batter was too clumpy. Rather than giving up, he and his helpers made the cake again, adjusting the recipe before producing the final version. That second attempt proved to be worth the extra work. Martin’s cake received both champion and grand champion honours at the fair, putting his entry at the centre of the evening’s cake auction. The achievement was especially notable given his age. While baking can require patience and attention to detail even for experienced cooks, Martin spent hours working on a competition entry that would ultimately attract a five-figure bid. After the result was announced, Martin told The Baltimore Sun that he had won both champion and grand champion honours, proudly describing it as “First place.”

$15,000 bid supports the fair

The cake’s impressive selling price was not simply about the dessert itself. The auction is part of the Carroll County 4-H and FFA Fair’s fundraising efforts, meaning the money generated goes toward supporting the fair and its youth-related programmes. The Good Ole Carroll County Farm & Business Syndicate, a group of local business owners, pooled their money to purchase Martin’s cake for $15,000. According to fair cake auction superintendent Amy Petkovsek, the money raised helps support the fair’s operation. The 2026 auction raised more than $100,000 in total, making it an important source of funding for future fairs and related programmes. Martin’s cake represented the highest individual bid at the 2026 auction. The amount also stands out when compared with the previous year’s top-selling cake. Lorelai Masimore’s chocolate cake with cookies-and-cream frosting sold for $10,500 in 2025, meaning Martin’s cake brought in $4,500 more this year.

A tradition of valuable cakes

The Carroll County fair’s cake auction has developed a reputation for attracting surprisingly high bids, with winning cakes sometimes selling for thousands of dollars. Martin’s $15,000 sale follows several notable results from previous editions. The auction is part of the broader Carroll County 4-H and FFA Fair, which is now in its 129th year. The 2026 fair began on July 31 and runs through August 8, featuring agricultural and community activities alongside entertainment, food vendors, line dancing and other events. For Martin, however, the significance of the night goes beyond the final price tag. His cake represented hours of work, an unsuccessful first attempt and the determination to try again. Staying up until 2 a.m. to perfect the recipe ultimately resulted in both the grand champion title and a $15,000 auction sale. The story also highlights the role of county fairs and 4-H programmes in giving children opportunities to develop practical skills and showcase their work. Martin’s experience demonstrates how a simple baking project can become a memorable accomplishment when dedication, creativity and community support come together. His lemon blueberry buttercream cake may have been bought by a group of local businesses, but the $15,000 result is ultimately helping support the same community fair where a 10-year-old baker got the opportunity to compete in the first place.
