The couple had not anticipated becoming parents to two babies at once, but their excitement soon came with a serious medical concern, reported PEOPLE.Doctors diagnosed Pierre Louis with a monochorionic-monoamniotic pregnancy, commonly known as a “MoMo” pregnancy. In this arrangement, both babies share one placenta and one amniotic sac instead of developing in separate sacs. The condition is extremely rare, occurring in approximately one out of every 10,000 pregnancies.Although the babies share a close physical connection, the pregnancy can carry significant risks. The umbilical cords may become tangled or compressed, potentially reducing the babies’ blood supply. Other complications can include unequal growth between the twins, premature delivery and health problems affecting the mother, including preeclampsia.“I was scared,” Pierre Louis recalled to PEOPLE.Her doctor, Dr. Alexander L. Juusela, a maternal-fetal medicine specialist at Newark Beth Israel and assistant clinical professor at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School, explained that cord entanglement is one of the most serious concerns in a MoMo pregnancy. If the cord becomes too tightly wrapped, it can cut off oxygen and nutrients to one or both babies.Hospital monitoring brought reassurance

Photo credit : Shedeline Pierre Louis

Because of the risks, Pierre Louis was admitted to the hospital at 26 weeks for close monitoring. The arrangement meant she was never far from medical professionals who could track the babies’ growth and watch for signs of distress. The experience was understandably difficult for a first-time mother. But Pierre Louis said she found comfort in the reassurance of the hospital team and in her faith.“Every day, the staff assured me that the pregnancy was going well… So I believe them. I put God first and then the doctors,” she said. The medical team had hoped to continue the pregnancy until around 34 weeks, giving the babies more time to develop. But doctors noticed that one twin was showing signs of reduced growth, and the decision was made to deliver the babies at 32 weeks. The moment the twins arrivedThe cesarean delivery went well, but it included an extraordinary moment that the medical team will not soon forget. Juusela and his colleagues delivered the sisters while they were still inside the same amniotic sac.For roughly 10 seconds, both babies remained connected to the placenta and continued receiving oxygen. Then, as doctors opened the sac, they saw that the girls were holding on to each other, as per the report.“They were hugging each other as they came out,” Juusela said. “Even after we broke the water, they didn’t want to let each other go. So it was very cute.”The sight was emotionally powerful not only for the doctor but also for the parents, who had spent weeks worrying about whether their daughters would make it safely through the pregnancy.A long NICU journeyBecause Shednhee and Claydee were born at 32 weeks, they needed specialized care after delivery. The premature babies received steroids to help their lungs develop and supplemental oxygen to support their breathing. They remained in the NICU for nearly two months while doctors and nurses monitored their progress. For Pierre Louis, the separation was one of the hardest parts of becoming a mother.“When I don’t see them, I’m like, ‘Am I even a mom?’” she said. “I’m at home and then there’s no babies.”The experience is common among parents of premature babies, who may spend weeks visiting the hospital, learning their children’s care routines and waiting for doctors to decide when it is safe to go home. For Pierre Louis and Bontant, the long-awaited discharge represented the beginning of a new chapter.A joyful homecomingOn July 23, hospital staff celebrated the twins’ release with a colourful send-off. Doctors, nurses and other members of the care team gathered to mark the girls’ progress and say goodbye to the family after caring for them for almost two months. For the parents, bringing the babies home was a moment they had imagined throughout the pregnancy and NICU stay. It also meant adjusting to the ordinary challenges of caring for two newborns: feeding, sleeping, crying and learning each baby’s personality.Already, the sisters appear to have different temperaments. Shednhee is quick to become impatient when she is hungry and cries to make sure her parents know she wants to be fed. It continued through a premature birth, a long NICU stay and the anxiety of waiting for the day they could finally leave the hospital. But it also included an unforgettable first image: two babies entering the world in an embrace and refusing to let go.
