Big Missile Race Reveal Rocks US Military | WATCH

The Trump administration, however, has firmly rejected suggestions that the US military is running short of critical munitions.President Donald Trump recently said the United States has “far more munitions than anyone in the world” and “far more than we need.”Reiterating that position in a Truth Social post on Wednesday, Trump said the US has “massive amounts of munitions” and that defence companies are expanding production while building new factories. He added that additional supplies were being manufactured and delivered as required.Trump also criticised those leaking information about US weapons stockpiles, describing the disclosures as “treasonous” and warning that those responsible were being “hunted down” and could face lengthy prison sentences.Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell echoed that stance, saying the US military “has everything it needs” to conduct operations worldwide and dismissing reports of depleted stockpiles as “fictional.”Why has the debate intensified?Questions over US interceptor missile inventories have grown after months of intensive military operations in the Middle East and a series of reports by major news organisations and defence analysts.A recent Washington Post report, citing anonymous officials familiar with internal discussions, claimed Trump confronted Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth during a Camp David meeting over the state of US missile stockpiles.According to the report, shortages of long-range precision-guided weapons and interceptor missiles had become one of the factors influencing US military planning during the conflict with Iran. The White House and Pentagon rejected the report. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt called it “100% fake news,” while Parnell described the claims as “fictional.”Reuters has also reported growing concern within the Pentagon over inventories of precision-guided munitions following sustained military operations. At the same time, Reuters noted that US officials maintain the military retains sufficient capability to meet operational requirements. The agency also reported that the Pentagon has accelerated efforts to replenish key inventories through expanded defence contracts and increased missile production. While official stockpile figures remain classified, the reports reflect broader concerns shared by defence experts about long-term sustainability.

Terminal high altitude area defense (THAAD)

What do analysts estimate? The Pentagon does not publicly disclose interceptor missile inventories, meaning much of the public debate relies on estimates by independent defence research organisations. One of the most frequently cited assessments comes from the Washington-based Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), which estimates that the US military currently possesses fewer than 1,000 Patriot interceptors and fewer than 250 THAAD interceptors.CSIS says the figures are derived from publicly available procurement records, defence budgets, production rates and historical deliveries rather than classified information. While acknowledging they are estimates, the think tank argues they illustrate the mounting strain on US missile inventories after months of sustained combat operations and continued military support for allies.Several defence experts contend that the bigger challenge is not the current size of the arsenal but the time required to replace sophisticated interceptor missiles.Brad Bowman, senior director of the Center on Military and Political Power at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies (FDD), told The Washington Post that pressure on US missile inventories predates the latest conflict.According to Bowman, the United States had already used more than a quarter of its THAAD interceptor inventory during the 2025 Israel-Iran conflict, while the current war has “made those inadequacies even worse.”He also warned that rebuilding inventories would take years because defence manufacturers cannot significantly expand production until contracts are finalised and Congress approves funding.

<img doing?Acknowledging that replenishing advanced interceptor inventories will take time, the Pentagon has launched a series of multi-billion-dollar procurement initiatives aimed at expanding missile production capacity. The effort extends beyond manufacturing complete missiles to increasing output of critical components such as rocket motors, seekers and ignition systems, which have emerged as major production bottlenecks. In early August, the department of defense signed framework agreements worth more than $3 billion with Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman to expand production of components used in Patriot PAC-3 and THAAD interceptors.According to the Pentagon, the initiative is designed to triple Patriot production capacity, quadruple THAAD production and establish a second supplier of PAC-3 rocket motors to strengthen supply-chain resilience. The component contracts follow an even larger procurement programme announced in July, when the US Army awarded Lockheed Martin a contract worth up to $58.6 billion to manufacture Patriot PAC-3 interceptor missiles.Separately, the Pentagon has reached a long-term agreement with RTX (Raytheon) to sharply increase Tomahawk cruise missile production, with annual output expected to rise from about 60 missiles to more than 1,000.

<a
