He left home at just 12, lived away from his family, and later suffered the heartbreaking loss of his father before reaching the biggest moments of his career. Even after achieving everything in football, Ronaldo still says one of his biggest regrets is that his father never got to see what he became.<\/p>\n Cristiano Ronaldo grew up in San Antonio, a working-class neighbourhood in Funchal, Madeira. His mother, Maria Dolores dos Santos Aveiro, worked as a cook and cleaner, while his father, Jos\u00e9 Dinis Aveiro, worked as a municipal gardener and also helped as a kit man at a local football club. Money was always tight, and the family often struggled to afford basic needs.When Sporting CP spotted Ronaldo\u2019s talent, he left Madeira at the age of 12 to join the club\u2019s academy in Lisbon. It was one of the hardest decisions of his life. He missed his family, cried often and was teased because of his Madeiran accent. Instead of giving up, he poured all his energy into football.Years later, Ronaldo remembered just how difficult those days were.\u201cWe were a little hungry. We had a McDonald\u2019s next to the stadium\u2026 We knocked on the door and asked if they had any burgers. There was always Edna and two other girls.
