The Province of British Columbia is investing $500,000 in a large-scale restoration effort covering 70 hectares of marshland, to strengthen watershed health, improve climate resilience, and supporting Indigenous stewardship in the Cowichan Valley.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"2\"\/>This is not just an environmental cleanup project. It is being framed as a long-term investment in biodiversity, flood protection, local food systems, and the health of one of Vancouver Island\u2019s most important salmon-bearing ecosystems, according to British Columbia Gov News.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"4\"\/><span class=\"strong\" data-ua-type=\"1\" onclick=\"stpPgtnAndPrvntDefault(event)\">Why the estuary matters<\/span><span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"6\"\/>Estuaries may cover a small share of B.C.\u2019s coastline, but they do an outsized amount of ecological work. According to the province, they make up just 2.3% of the coast yet support more than 80% of coastal fish and wildlife at some point in their life cycle.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"10\"\/>That includes wild Pacific salmon, steelhead, shorebirds, waterfowl, grizzly bears and orcas, along with species that matter to local food systems and fisheries such as herring, crabs, clams and oysters. In the Cowichan watershed, that ecological role is especially important because the estuary sits in the path of changing tides, rising sea levels and increasing flood risk.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"12\"\/><span class=\"strong\" data-ua-type=\"1\" onclick=\"stpPgtnAndPrvntDefault(event)\">What the project aims to do<\/span><span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"14\"\/>The restoration work is being led in partnership with the Nature Trust of BC and Cowichan Tribes, with support from long-term funding partners including the Habitat Conservation Trust Foundation, Ducks Unlimited, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, and Environment and Climate Change Canada. Planned work includes rebuilding habitat for fish, birds and other wildlife, restoring natural areas, expanding the native plant nursery, monitoring groundwater, and improving public access through trails, signage and a viewing platform.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"18\"\/>One of the biggest goals is flood resilience. The province says restored marshlands can absorb floodwater, buffer storm surges and help protect nearby communities and farmland from sea-level rise. <!-- -->Without the project, as much as 60% of the marsh habitat in the estuary could be lost over time.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"22\"\/><span class=\"strong\" data-ua-type=\"1\" onclick=\"stpPgtnAndPrvntDefault(event)\">Indigenous stewardship at the centre<\/span><span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"24\"\/>A key part of the project is the role of Cowichan Tribes in shaping the restoration work. Elders and community members are guiding how the land will be used, including planting culturally significant species that can restore habitat and support food security for both Cowichan Tribes and the wider community.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"27\"\/>Chief Sulsulxumaat Cindy Daniels said the project reflects generations of Quw&#8217;utsun stewardship and the responsibility to care for these lands and waters. She said restoring the links between land, water, plants, fish and people will strengthen Indigenous food systems and help younger generations reconnect with harvesting practices that have supported Quw&#8217;utsun Mustimuhw for generations.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"30\"\/><span class=\"strong\" data-ua-type=\"1\" onclick=\"stpPgtnAndPrvntDefault(event)\">What makes it significant<\/span><span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"32\"\/>This is being described as the largest estuary restoration project on Vancouver Island, and it comes at a time when climate pressure is already reshaping coastal ecosystems, as per the report. <!-- -->The province says the work will help protect biodiversity while also supporting local communities that depend on the estuary for food, medicine and nature-based benefits.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"36\"\/>The project also received the Real Estate Foundation of BC\u2019s Land Award for Food Sovereignty in June 2026, which recognises leadership in protecting lands and waters and building resilient communities.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"38\"\/>Meanwhile, Cowichan\u2019s estuary is a reminder that restoration is about more than habitat repair.
