He had every right to give up. He lost his son to cancer; a failed cataract surgery cost him his left eye; his marriage ended in pain; and, to top it off, there were financial hardships. This man had every reason in the world to give up on life and his goals, but he didn\u2019t. Instead, he became one of the most successful billionaire investors in the history of humankind. In his early 20s, Charlie Munger had everything: a Harvard Law School graduate, magna cum laude; a respectable position at Wright & Garrett in Los Angeles, earning a respectable-for-the-era salary; and a stable marriage. Everything looked perfect.Then his marriage collapsed. The divorce stripped him of nearly everything: his family, his home in South Pasadena, and most of his assets. He had to move to what his friends described as \u2018dreadful\u2019 living conditions at the University Club in Pasadena. Even his daughter Molly asked why he drove a \u2018terrible\u2019 yellow Pontiac. In the months that followed, it was all about survival.In less than two years, life threw another curveball. His first son, Teddy, aged eight, was diagnosed with leukaemia. At the time, this was effectively a death sentence; survival rates were extremely low. He did everything possible. He would visit his son in hospital while also taking care of his other children. In 1955, Munger lost Teddy, who was just nine.\u201cI cried all the time when my first child died. But I knew I couldn\u2019t change anything. In those days, the fatality rate with childhood leukaemia was 100%,\u201d Munger said.Munger was just 31: divorced, broke, and burying his child. It took a heavy toll on him. He was heartbroken. At this point, he had every reason to give up. He could have blamed fate. But he was not someone who gave up easily. Years later, he told CNBC how he overcame that grim period in his life:\u201cWell, we all know how to get through them. The great philosophers of realism are also the great philosophers of what I call soldiering through. If you soldier through, you can get through almost anything. And it\u2019s your only option.\u201dSpeaking of grief and how he processed it, he added, \u201cYou can\u2019t bring back the dead. You can\u2019t cure the dying child. You can\u2019t do all kinds of things. You have to soldier through it. Somehow, you just soldier through.\u201dHe never believed in quitting. He knew he had to move forward, no matter what.\u201cIf you have to walk through the streets, crying for a few hours a day as part of the soldiering, go ahead and cry. But you can\u2019t quit. You can cry, all right, but you can\u2019t quit.\u201dThe challenges were far from over. At 52, a failed cataract surgery left him blind in one eye. Yet, in the face of adversity, Munger always maintained that he would never give up.The choice that changed everything<\/span><\/p>\n

Munger refused to see himself as a victim. He wasn\u2019t ready to retreat into self-pity or pursue revenge fantasies. Instead, he made a deliberate choice to turn his pain into power. He began to educate himself and work relentlessly. He studied the patterns that governed wealth and failure. He kept reading, kept compounding, and maintained his temperament. He chose discipline over emotion.\u201cEnvy, resentment, revenge, and self-pity are disastrous modes of thought. Self-pity gets close to paranoia. Every mischance in life is an opportunity to behave well and learn. It\u2019s not to be immersed in self-pity but to utilise the blow constructively,\u201d he later said.In 1956, he remarried. Three years later, he met Warren Buffett<\/a> at a dinner in Omaha. Their partnership built one of the greatest fortunes in American history. Together, they transformed Berkshire Hathaway into one of the most successful and valuable companies in America, making both men extraordinarily wealthy.By the age of 69, Munger was already wealthy and a widely respected figure in investing circles, one of the great minds in the field.This was a man who faced setbacks at every turn. But instead of dwelling on them, he turned them into data. Every loss became a lesson in what mattered and what didn\u2019t. Munger understood something most people don\u2019t: challenges are part and parcel of life, but how you deal with them is what truly matters.\u201cThe iron rule of life is: everybody struggles,\u201d he once said.Charlie Munger passed away in 2023 at the age of 99. His life offers no simple moral. It stands as proof of resilience. It\u2019s about what you do when pain arrives anyway, when you\u2019re broke, and when there is nowhere to go but forward.<\/div>\n
