But when federal officers inspected the trailer, X-rays revealed a much bigger problem: more than 1,000 pounds of cocaine hidden beneath the floorboards of the attached flatbed, as per a press release shared by the United States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).Authorities say the narcotics had an estimated street value of more than $20 million. The truck’s driver, 44-year-old Jose Manuel Lopez Lopez, was arrested after officers found 366 packages tucked inside the trailer. The case has now become one of the biggest cocaine seizures in Southern California this year, and a reminder that even ordinary-looking freight can be used to conceal major contraband. How officers found the drugsAccording to the U.S. Department of Justice, Customs and Border Protection officers sent the trailer through an X-ray scan during a border inspection. The scan showed anomalies in the wooden floorboards, prompting officers to investigate further.A drug-sniffing dog then alerted to the vehicle, giving officers another reason to dig deeper. Investigators unloaded the rebar first and then removed the planks from the trailer floor, where they found packages stuffed beneath the boards. The recovery totaled 366 packages of cocaine weighing 1,002.13 pounds, or 454.56 kilograms. That’s what made the case especially striking: the illegal cargo was hidden inside equipment that looked like part of the job rather than part of a smuggling operation.Federal authorities said the truck’s only occupant was Lopez, who entered the United States from Mexicali, Mexico. Prosecutors later charged him with illegally importing cocaine into the country. This kind of concealment is exactly why border screening relies on more than paperwork alone. X-rays, canine units and physical inspections can reveal hidden compartments that would otherwise blend in with legitimate freight. One of the biggest cocaine busts in the districtOfficials said the Calexico seizure was the second-largest cocaine recovery in the Southern District of California in 2026. The only larger bust came in May, when investigators uncovered more than a ton of cocaine valued at over $45 million in connection with a cross-border tunnel near Otay Mesa. That earlier case involved a 1,933-foot tunnel linking Tijuana to a retail store near the border. Authorities said it was roughly 55 feet deep and had reinforced walls, rails, ventilation and electricity. The tunnel’s exit was found beneath a storage-room floor, concealed by a hydraulic lift.Taken together, the two seizures show how traffickers keep adapting. Sometimes the drugs move through engineered tunnels; other times they are hidden in plain sight inside a commercial trailer.Court case and next stepsLopez pleaded not guilty during his federal arraignment on July 28. U.S. Magistrate Judge Lupe Rodriguez Jr. set a detention hearing for Aug. 3 at 10 a.m., and the case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Paul Benjamin and Lawrence Casper, as per reports. He faces a charge of importing cocaine into the United States under Title 21, U.S. Code, Sections 952 and 960. The offense carries a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years in prison and could lead to a maximum sentence of life if he is convicted. As with any federal criminal case, the accusation is not a finding of guilt. Lopez is presumed innocent unless and until the government proves its case in court. Why it matters for freightFor the freight industry, the case is a sharp reminder that routine cargo can still hide serious risk. A trailer loaded with rebar may look like a normal commercial move, but if the structure itself has been altered, the consequences can be enormous for the driver, the shipper and anyone involved in the chain. That is why inspection technology and strong compliance checks matter so much at border crossings. Smuggling organisations often rely on legitimate-looking equipment and ordinary cargo to move high-value contraband, and this seizure shows how quickly that can happen.

Source link

A truck carrying 269 bundles of rebar reached California’s Calexico Port of Entry with what looked like a routine commercial load.
