Hundreds of structures were destroyed or damaged, and officials said it would take time to assess the full toll. No serious fire-related injuries or deaths had been reported.More than 600 structures had been damaged in the three fires, a toll that would put them among the most destructive in Washington’s history. Some residents returned to assess the damage and recover what belongings they could, while others waited to be allowed back into their neighbourhoods, CNN reported. Evacuees described leaving with little more than they could carry, and some stepped through hot rubble to retrieve possessions. One woman who lost her home of more than 21 years described the loss as “heartbreaking”, adding: “But we’re safe, so that’s all that matters.”

What is the latest on the fires?

The Autumn Lane Fire northwest of Spokane, which required the largest response on Sunday, remained “very active”, although crews had “relatively decent control” of its boundaries. It was the highest-priority fire in the US, while the other two blazes were holding.Crews were still trying to confirm that no one was missing or injured among the hundreds of destroyed structures. A fire chief said there remained a “potential for loss of life”. The cause of the three fires was under investigation.

Evacuations, outages and emergency response

More than 10,000 residents remained without power, down from more than 30,000 at the peak. Officials said it would take time to allow affected residents to return safely to their neighbourhoods.Level 3 evacuation orders were issued for several areas, directing residents to leave immediately because of life-threatening conditions. A shelter opened at a local community college. Evacuations were also ordered at Spokane’s veterans’ hospital, water reclamation facility and waste-to-energy plant.Aircraft and bulldozers were among the resources deployed to fight 15 fires across Washington. More than 100 National Guard members were assisting the Spokane County community, while more than 4,000 personnel were battling fires across the state. Crews from more than a dozen states and Australia had also joined the response.Washington governor Bob Ferguson said he had spoken to US President Donald Trump, who was aware of the fires, and homeland security secretary Markwayne Mullin. The state expected short-term assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency to be approved and was working to request long-term aid.US senator Maria Cantwell said the Autumn Lane Fire’s designation as the country’s highest-priority blaze meant Washington would receive priority for federal resources. Ferguson had declared a statewide emergency and imposed a burn ban.

Will weather conditions improve?

Weather conditions improved after sustained winds of 20mph to 30mph, with gusts topping 40mph, swept through eastern Washington, including Spokane, for several hours on Saturday. By Sunday, winds had eased to between 5mph and 15mph, with gusts of up to 20mph.Fire weather concerns in eastern Washington fell from the highest Level 3 of 3 “extremely critical” category to a lower but still elevated Level 1 of 3 threat. Cooler temperatures were helping, but dry fuels, low humidity and occasional breezes meant existing fires and any new ones could still spread.Warmer and drier weather was expected to return to Spokane and eastern Washington by midweek. Winds from the north and northwest were forecast to carry smoke from regional wildfires, including fires in British Columbia, into parts of eastern Washington and northern Idaho. Air quality concerns could persist through the middle of the week.

Pacific Northwest faces severe fire season

Washington was battling at least 10 large fires that had burned more than 425,000 acres this year, the most since 2021, amid a fourth consecutive year of drought. In Oregon, more than 1,300 wildfires had burned about 1.9 million acres this year. The Pacific Northwest was facing its worst fire season in more than 30 years.Nearly 30,000 fires had ignited across the US as of late spring, burning more than 2 million acres, the most in 14 years.
