However, 349 villages across Golaghat, Sivasagar, Charaideo, Jorhat, Bajali, Dhemaji and Sonitpur districts remain affected.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"7\"\/><span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"9\"\/>Charaideo is the worst-hit district, with more than 75,000 people affected, followed by over 58,000 in Sivasagar. Nearly 15,060 hectares of crop area remain submerged, while thousands of livestock have been affected or washed away.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"11\"\/><\/p>\n<p><h2>Relief and rescue under way<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p>A total of 44 relief camps are currently sheltering around 15,000 displaced people, while another 17 relief distribution centres are providing assistance to more than 5,500 residents. The state government has directed district administrations to expedite the identification of affected families so that financial assistance can begin from August 3.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"16\"\/><\/p>\n<p><h3>Villagers rescue over 1,000 people in Sivasagar<\/h3>\n<\/p>\n<p>One of the most remarkable rescue stories emerged from the Nepali Khuti area in Sivasagar district, where local villagers used six country-made boats to rescue more than 1,000 people from five villages after floodwaters rose rapidly on July 19.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"19\"\/>Residents said families were trapped on rooftops, elevated platforms and trees as water levels surged. <!-- -->The volunteer rescuers continued operations through the night despite having little food or water, ferrying stranded villagers to safer areas.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"23\"\/><\/p>\n<p><h3>CM reviews flood-hit districts and compensation plans<\/h3>\n<\/p>\n<p>Chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma began a tour of the worst-hit districts on Sunday to oversee relief operations and prepare for a comprehensive damage assessment exercise scheduled to begin on August 9.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"26\"\/>The government has also directed officials to ensure uninterrupted distribution of relief kits, assess damage to educational institutions before schools reopen on August 10, and prepare restoration plans for damaged Namghars (Vaishnavite prayer centres).<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"29\"\/><\/p>\n<p><h2>IIT-Guwahati to be engaged for <keyword id=\"31370740\" type=\"Denny\" weightage=\"20\" keywordseo=\"Brahmaputra-erosion\" source=\"keywords\">Brahmaputra erosion<\/keyword> solution<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p>During his visit to erosion-hit areas of Dibrugarh district, including Chabua, Balijan, Pukhurijan, Dinjan and Rahmoria, Sarma announced that the state government will engage experts from IIT-Guwahati to develop a long-term solution to the Brahmaputra river\u2019s erosion problem.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"32\"\/>Calling riverbank erosion one of Assam\u2019s biggest geographical challenges, the chief minister said the state loses valuable land every year and that modern technology would be used to strengthen vulnerable riverbanks. <!-- -->The proposed IIT initiative will complement the government\u2019s planned Rs 90 crore erosion mitigation project.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"36\"\/><\/p>\n<p><h2>Agriculture rehabilitation begins<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p>Agriculture minister Pijush Hazarika visited Charaideo district on Sunday to review post-flood rehabilitation measures and launched community paddy nurseries and seedling distribution programmes for flood-affected farmers.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"39\"\/>The government said quality seedlings and other assistance would be provided to ensure cultivation resumes without delay during the current agricultural season.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"42\"\/><\/p>\n<p><h2>Aid pours in from NGOs, celebrities and political organisations<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p>Support for flood-hit communities has continued to grow across Assam.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"45\"\/>Actor Randeep Hooda joined a relief drive organised by Global Sikhs in Sivasagar district, distributing essential supplies and serving food through langar for affected families. Sarma thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah for extending assistance and for deploying Inter-Ministerial Central Teams to support relief and rehabilitation planning.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"55\"\/>Reliance Foundation has also contributed Rs 21 crore to the Chief Minister\u2019s Relief Fund for flood relief and rehabilitation efforts.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"57\"\/>While water levels have started falling in parts of the state, the crisis is far from over. Thousands remain displaced, farmland continues to lie under water, and many families face the difficult task of rebuilding homes and livelihoods.
