Grape berries are drying under the sun, speeding up sugar levels while reducing juice production for the 2026 vintage.

Evacuation orders lifted around Bordeaux

In Gironde, emergency teams successfully controlled a major fire that had burned for more than a week near the famous winemaking region.Gironde Prefect Sophie Brocas confirmed in an official statement that evacuation orders have been lifted across 12 districts west and south-west of Bordeaux. The decision allows around 144,000 of the more than 220,000 displaced residents to return home.Despite the vineyards remaining physically safe, the wider impact on agriculture across France continues to grow under the intense summer heat.

Greek forces battle 70 separate blazes

Further east, emergency services are facing much tougher conditions. Reuters reported that Greek firefighters battled more than 70 fires on Friday alone, fighting blazes on the outskirts of Athens, central Greece, and the island of Crete.Smoke covered the heavily forested hills around Athens, leading to precautionary evacuations west of the capital. In Boeotia, north-west of Athens, coastguard boats and private fishing vessels evacuated hundreds of residents and visitors from coastal communities as thick orange smoke spread across the area. Huge red flames lit up the hills above Porto Germeno through the night.“The winds have died down, that might be the good news of the day. The intensity of the fire seems to have gone down a bit, but it’s still a big, uncontrolled front,” Georgios Dasiotis, vice prefect of Boeotia prefecture, told Greece’s SKAI TV, adding that much of the fire remained in hard-to-reach mountain areas. The Greek fire brigade placed its forces on maximum alert, warning of critical fire danger across the Attica peninsula, Evia, and central regions.

Tourist evacuations on Crete

On the island of Crete, a 15-kilometre fire front forced emergency crews to stay alert against new flare-ups across the rough terrain.“We are fighting a huge battle to contain the blaze and hope to bring it under control by the end of the day,” said Giorgos Tsapakos, deputy regional governor of Civil Protection of Crete. Tsapakos said wind gusts reaching 115 kph made both air and ground firefighting operations much more difficult. The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) in Geneva estimated that 2,000 tourists were evacuated from coastal communities on Crete. The organisation confirmed that the fire destroyed homes, farmland, livestock, and centuries-old olive groves.

Mediterranean relief as Spanish blazes ease

Conditions showed signs of improving in Spain, where national emergency declarations were lifted for Madrid and Avila in central Spain, handing control back to regional authorities. However, local officials remain on high alert. Nearly 1,000 residents across Pelayos de la Presa and San Martin de Valdeiglesias were still unable to return home on Friday because of lingering smoke and active flare-ups.In Castellon province, a fire near La Vall d’Uixo remained active but stopped spreading for 48 hours, leaving around 6,000 residents displaced. Meanwhile, strong winds pushed flames through the Duero and Tormes river canyons inside Zamora’s Arribes del Duero Natural Park near the Portuguese border, forcing the evacuation of 14 villages.

Record continent-wide warmth

The severe wildfire season comes as Europe experiences record-breaking temperatures. Data collected by the Reuters Climate Monitor showed that Europe’s average temperature on Friday reached 24.9 degrees Celsius. This was 3.3 degrees Celsius above the historical average recorded between 1961 and 1990, making Europe the fastest-warming continent compared with its historical climate.Scientists quoted by Reuters warned that widespread smoke and ash have exposed millions of Europeans to higher levels of fine particulate matter (PM2.5), increasing the risk of heart and breathing problems across affected regions.

Climate change reshapes Europe’s vineyards

Climate experts say Europe is warming at roughly twice the global average, making the continent more vulnerable to prolonged heatwaves and drought. According to the European Union’s Copernicus Climate Change Service, higher temperatures are drying out vegetation earlier in the season, creating ideal conditions for wildfires to spread quickly. Reduced winter snowfall in some regions and below-average rainfall have also lowered soil moisture, leaving forests and farmland under greater stress during summer. For Europe’s wine industry, changing weather patterns are reshaping traditional growing seasons. Harvests in several major wine-producing countries, including France, Spain and Italy, now begin weeks earlier than they did decades ago. While warmer conditions can increase sugar content in grapes, they may also reduce acidity, affecting the balance and flavour profile of wines. Water shortages are forcing many growers to adopt drought-resistant grape varieties, improve irrigation efficiency and adjust vineyard management practices to cope with increasingly unpredictable weather.Researchers warn that if extreme heat and prolonged dry periods become more frequent, southern Europe’s agricultural regions could face declining crop yields, higher production costs and greater risks from wildfires, posing long-term challenges for food security and rural economies.

<a
