It took more than six hours to evacuate the ship, after which 32 people among the 3,229 passengers and 1,023 crew members were confirmed dead.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"4\"\/>Thanks to Metcalf, who was just 23 years old at the time, the number of fatalities did not reach higher. Reflecting on her actions on the U.K. <!-- -->daytime show Good Morning Britain (GMB) on Friday, July 31, Metcalf joked that, as a dancer, she didn\u2019t expect to have people\u2019s lives in her hands.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"9\"\/>Despite being new to the ship, she said that she also quickly realised that many of the crew did not initially realise how serious the situation was, until the vessel began to tip over. \u201cI was one of 12 fluent English speakers on board,\u201d said Metcalf, who explained that she was tasked with doing a roll call of about 30 crew members as a result. \u201cBut I ended up being responsible for about 400 just because nobody else was stepping up,\u201d she added.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"13\"\/><\/p>\n<div data-pos=\"0\" class=\"id-r-component iIpbx undefined  &#10;        \">\n<div><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Rose Metcalf was just 23 years old at the time\" msid=\"132787567\" width=\"\" title=\"She was tasked with doing a roll call of about 30 crew members since she was one of the 12 people aboard who knew English\" placeholdersrc=\"https:\/\/static.toiimg.com\/photo\/83033472.cms\" imgsize=\"\" resizemode=\"4\" offsetvertical=\"0\" placeholdermsid=\"47529300\" type=\"thumb\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/static.toiimg.com\/photo\/msid-132787567\/rose-metcalf-was-just-23-years-old-at-the-time.jpg\" data-api-prerender=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p>She was tasked with doing a roll call of about 30 crew members since she was one of the 12 people aboard who knew English<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"15\"\/>When the ship turned on its side and the lifeboats inside were no longer accessible, Metcalf came up with the idea for crew members to link arms and form a human chain. GMB co-host Adil Ray asked her how she remained composed enough to come up with the idea when most people in that situation would be panicking or trying to save their own lives. <!-- -->\u201cI wasn\u2019t composed; I was in complete fight-or-flight,\u201d Metcalf laughed. \u201cThis hallway had become like [an elevator] shaft.<!-- --> There was a bannister [on] the far side of it, so I said, \u2018Why don\u2019t we throw people across?\u2019 \u201d<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"20\"\/>This idea was eventually dropped because, as Metcalf explained, it would have been a \u201cdeath sentence\u201d if they fell. Instead, she came up with the idea for people to grab onto the bannister and link arms.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"23\"\/>\u201cWe climbed down each other so that you can get to water level,\u201d explained Metcalf. \u201cThe problem was&#8230; we were so high up, we\u2019d have hit the water like concrete.\u201d \u201cThat\u2019s what you don\u2019t realise,\u201d she continued. \u201cWhen you see the ship listed on its side, you think you could just step off it. You can\u2019t.\u201d<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"26\"\/>Metcalf said she was in a group of five that eventually became trapped as the ship continued to turn over. \u201cWe thought we were going down like the Titanic,\u201d she said, recalling that she prepared herself to enter the water if she needed to. <!-- -->\u201cThis little slideshow went through my mind, of my life,\u201d she recalled of realising that she could die in the disaster.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"30\"\/>Yet she continued to help. She ripped a light out of the wall and put it in her pocket, and later used it to alert search and rescue teams. When she saw a helicopter above the ship but realised it could not see them, she rewired the light using her earring and flashed it at the aircraft.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"32\"\/>The hosts hailed Metcalf\u2019s rescue efforts, but she emphasised that she was not the only person responsible for saving lives. \u201cThere were a lot of heroes that night,\u201d<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a
