The NHL<\/a> star commented after the Toronto Maple Leafs won the 2026 NHL Draft Lottery and earned the opportunity to select the Penn State forward first overall, Gavin McKenna ahead of the upcoming season.Gavin McKenna recorded 15 goals and 36 assists for 51 points in 35 games at Penn State last season, and was a top 10 finalist for the Hobey Baker Award, presented annually to the top NCAA men’s hockey player, as per the NHL.However, speaking on the Toronto Maple Leafs’ contract signing with Gavin McKenna, McDavid commented that McKenna has the mental toughness to handle the huge pressure and media attention that comes with playing for the Toronto Maple Leafs. Following this comment, not everyone was pleased with the remark in the league, including a prominent members of the sports media personality.<\/p>\n Edmonton Oilers superstar Connor McDavid<\/a> came under the scanner of the league after he commented on the Maple Leafs’ top overall pick, Gavin McKenna. On being asked about his thoughts on Gavin McKenna, he stated, “I don’t know much about him. I haven’t paid attention all that much, to be honest. Seems like he’s a good kid.”The remark triggered when he said, \u201cHe’ll have his hands full in Toronto, but he seems like he’s prepared for it. He’ll have a good support system there too, obviously with Auston (Matthews), and he’ll have lots of support around him, so he should be fine.”Following his comment on Gavin McKenna, the Edmonton Oilers NHL superstar captain, Connor McDavid, was challenged by Sid Seixeiro. Seixeiro argued that McDavid, despite being one of the NHL\u2019s biggest stars, does not fully understand the unique media environment surrounding the Maple Leafs.Seixeiro stated, “I am the last guy on earth who wants to rip on a player the calibre of Connor McDavid, but Connor McDavid doesn’t have a clue what it’s like playing hockey in the city of Toronto at that level.\u201dSeixeiro is of the opinion that McDavid does not have the necessary experience to fully understand the challenges that come with playing in Toronto. He also pointed the difference between the media scrutiny in Canada’s largest hockey market and the environment surrounding the Oilers.The Toronto Media personality further questioned and challenged whether McDavid could suggest how difficult McKenna’s experience in Toronto might be.“I am the last guy on earth who wants to rip on a player the calibre of Connor McDavid, but Connor McDavid doesn’t have a clue what it’s like playing hockey in the city of Toronto at that level,” Seixeiro said.He further added that, “Edmonton is not about that life.
