A legendary voice in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam cinema, Jamuna Rani recorded over 6,000 songs during a remarkable career spanning several decades, leaving behind a rich musical legacy that continues to inspire generations of artists and music lovers.<\/p>\n Born in Andhra Pradesh in 1938, Jamuna Rani made her debut in cinema as a playback singer at age seven in the Telugu film Tyagayya. She made her Tamil debut with Kalyani in 1952 and soon became one of the most sought-after singers in South Indian cinema. Her special voice and clear pronunciation helped her carve out a niche among music lovers. She rendered many memorable songs over the years, including ‘Senthamizh Then Mozhiyal,’ ‘Yaaradi Nee Mohini’, ‘Kungumapoove Konjum Purave’, ‘Mama Mama Mama’, ‘Kaalai Vayasu Kattana Size’, ‘Paattondru Ketten’, and ‘Naan Sirithaal Deepavali’ from Kamal Haasan’s ‘Nayakan’. Today many of these songs are still loved by the listeners.<\/p>\n Jamuna Rani worked with some of the greatest composers and filmmakers of her time, contributing to the golden era of South Indian film music. She was particularly noted for her versatility across many languages and genres. She was honoured with the Kalaimamani Award in 1998 by the Tamil Nadu government for her outstanding contribution to the arts. In her illustrious career she was also the recipient of the Anna Award. Her songs became part of Tamil cinema’s musical history, and apart from awards and accolades, they inspired generations of singers and musicians.<\/p>\n The veteran singer had been living with her family in Bangalore for the past few years. She died and her last rites will be performed at Kallahalli on Thursday afternoon. Tributes are coming in from the film industry, musicians, and fans, remembering the warmth and timelessness of her voice.
