He had already won championships with the Los Angeles Lakers and built a growing family with Shaunie Henderson after the couple secretly married in 2002. To the public, they appeared to have everything. Henderson would later reveal that the reality was far different.According to Henderson<\/a>, the turning point came because of a simple mix-up involving their nearly identical BlackBerry phones. At the time, BlackBerry devices typically came in standard black or silver designs, making it easy to mistake one phone for another.While attending one of her children’s school plays, Henderson realized the phone she was carrying would not stop buzzing.She later recalled:“Our Blackberries got switched. I went to my baby’s play at school, and I was like, ‘Damn, my phone is going off a lot.’ Just girl, after girl, after girl, like ‘Baby, last night what you did.'”Instead of routine messages, Henderson says she found texts from multiple women. What started as an ordinary day quickly became the moment she realized the marriage was not what she believed it to be. Across multiple interviews, podcasts and his own memoir, the four-time NBA champion has acknowledged that his behavior cost him his family.During an appearance on The Big Podcast with Shaq, he admitted he had been unfaithful throughout the marriage.“I was a serial cheater.”Rather than criticize others facing similar controversies, O’Neal said<\/a> he understood the consequences because he had lived through them himself.“I’m not proud of it. I lost my family doing it. Their children also had to adjust to life with divorced parents, a transition that both Shaq and his eldest son, Shareef O’Neal, have since discussed openly.Looking back, O’Neal admitted the divorce created distance between him and his children before they eventually rebuilt those relationships. Speaking on the expediTIously podcast, the Hall of Famer acknowledged the emotional toll his decisions had on his family.“In all of that, I’m just happy and blessed that they’ve forgiven me. Because me and my babies didn’t talk for a while.”He added that those experiences changed the way he approaches fatherhood today.“I’m teaching my boys to be better than me. Papa was a Rolling Stone. You don’t need to be like me.”His eldest son, Shareef, later offered his own perspective on the family’s difficult period. Appearing on Heir Time with Reginae Carter, he explained that he and his siblings struggled to understand why their parents were no longer together.“The first few years it was pretty hard. We were all too young to kind of understand what’s going on. Mom and dad aren’t going to be together. It wasn’t like a ‘choose a side’ thing.”According to Shareef<\/a>, neither parent pressured the children to take sides after the split.“My mom [was] like, ‘If you guys wanna go with your dad, go ahead.’ My dad’s like, ‘If y’all wanna go with your mom, go ahead.'”Perhaps the strongest sign of how the family has evolved came from Shareef’s description of their co-parenting relationship. Despite the pain surrounding the divorce, he said both parents consistently kept their children out of conflict.“I think the thing that I respect out of my parents both is how well they co-parent. They never come around and it’s a problem. My mom is remarried now. She can bring her husband around and dad [can] dap him up and have a conversation. In 2022, she married Houston pastor and author Keion Henderson after dating for two years, beginning a relationship she has frequently described as peaceful and effortless.Speaking to PEOPLE<\/a> after their first year of marriage, Henderson said the difference between her current relationship and her previous marriage was evident in everyday life.“Newlywed life is amazing. I love this guy, and the best part about it is he’s my best friend.”She continued by explaining why their marriage feels so natural.“We enjoy each other. We enjoy being around each other. We enjoy talking to each other and loving each other. So, it’s easy.”Keion Henderson offered a similar perspective, saying he felt an immediate connection from the day they met.“It’s been easy. I felt like the day I met her, I felt like I knew her.”He added that both of them make a conscious effort to keep their relationship fresh.“Every day we wake up, try to figure out how to make sure it feels as good as it was in the beginning. It’s worth it.”He added: “I think she’s the most deserving person in the world.”Meanwhile, O’Neal has remained candid about his own regrets.
