According to People<\/span>, the DIY approach and budget-friendly choices ultimately helped her save around $20,000 on the renovation.What began as a simple conversation about improving the house quickly evolved into a full-scale renovation. According to the homeowner, the original kitchen was small, closed off and lacked natural light. Meanwhile, her son’s bedroom featured large windows that made the space feel brighter and more inviting.“We looked at these giant windows and realised they were much better suited for a kitchen than a kid’s room,” she explained. The decision to swap the two rooms was unconventional, but for her family, it made perfect sense.<\/p>\n Like many DIY renovations, the project started with enthusiasm and little certainty about what lay ahead. The homeowner joked that she and her family were “armed only with delusion” when they began tearing out the old kitchen.As demolition progressed, the work became more challenging than expected. Once walls started coming down, there was no turning back.One of the biggest goals was removing a large fireplace wall that separated the old kitchen from the living room. Opening the space would allow significantly more natural light to flow through the house while eliminating an outdated oil heater that she believed was circulating unpleasant and potentially unhealthy fumes indoors.However, the renovation soon hit an unexpected obstacle.The family hired professionals to handle the demolition because the home’s ceilings contained asbestos. During the process, contractors discovered that the wall surrounding the fireplace was actually load-bearing, despite earlier assurances that it wasn’t. The news briefly threw the project into uncertainty.Fortunately, a contractor recommended by their handyman stepped in quickly and installed a structural support beam within just a couple of days. With the home’s structure secured, the renovation could finally move forward. <\/p>\n Once the structural work was complete, the homeowner focused on rebuilding the new kitchen while keeping costs under control.Instead of purchasing expensive custom cabinetry, the family ordered flat-pack cabinets which dramatically reduced expenses. Although they required assembly, she said they were much easier to put together than she had expected.Some additional framing work was needed where an old pocket door had once been, after which the cabinets were installed. She chose soft green cabinet fronts that gave the kitchen a cosy, English cottage-inspired look.To complement the cabinetry, she installed a simple, neutral backsplash that added brightness without overwhelming the space. She also made her own caf\u00e9 curtains, joking that they were created “on nothing but hopes and dreams” after several attempts to get them just right.Throughout the renovation, she tackled as much work as possible herself helping keep labour costs low. The combination of DIY effort and careful budgeting resulted in significant savings, compared with hiring professionals for the entire project.<\/p>\n With the major construction complete, the project entered its final stage. The homeowner was busy painting trim, filling nail holes and completing the last cosmetic details before revealing the finished kitchen. Although tools and renovation materials still occupied parts of the house, she said the transformation was finally beginning to match the vision she had from the start.This project demonstrates how non-conformist thoughts can change the whole concept of a house. She moved the kitchen to a brighter one in a more suitable room by overcoming the structural hurdles and doing all the work herself to make the kitchen more comfortable for her family.
