A teenager falling off a fairground ride, a child playing in a neighbourhood park, a young engineer walking home in the rain, an entire family caught up in a chain of rescue attempts \u2013 tragedies that unfolded in different corners of India but had a disturbing common thread.Recent incidents \u2013 from exposed wires and faulty infrastructure to poor maintenance and alleged negligence \u2013 have once again brought to the fore the dangers lurking in public spaces, residential areas and even educational institutions, raising urgent questions about electrical safety and accountability.<\/p>\n

A festival visit ends in tragedy in Odisha<\/span>A 16-year-old boy allegedly lost his life after coming into contact with an electric current at a fair organised during Rath Yatra celebrations in Odisha’s Gajapati district.Binod Behera, a resident of Paralakhemundi who had recently cleared his Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) examination, had joined his family in pulling the chariots of Lord Jagannath during the festival. After the religious ceremony, he visited the Meena Bazaar set up near the Gundicha temple, where a giant wheel ride was being operated by a private agency.According to police, Binod reportedly collapsed moments after getting off the ride. He was rushed to a nearby hospital but was declared dead.His father, Mohan Behera, alleged that his son came in contact with a live wire and died as a result. A complaint has been lodged at the Paralakhemundi police station.Police have registered a case and launched an investigation. Officials said the exact cause of death would be established after the post-mortem examination. Preliminary findings indicated that a power outage was underway in the area and the ride was being operated using a generator.<\/p>\n

The incident has left parents shaken and fearful.When local residents visited the park after the tragedy, they found electrical infrastructure in poor condition. One streetlight electrical box was reportedly open with exposed wiring, while another was found unsecured on a nearby pole.<\/p>\n

Another woman stated she had circulated photographs of exposed wires in local community groups to warn residents.The victim’s father, yoga instructor Randeep Kumar, said his son had frequently played in the park.Residents also claimed that several children witnessed the incident, leaving many traumatised.BSES-MCD dispute over responsibilit<\/span>yThe incident triggered a dispute between civic and power authorities.According to a BSES official, a joint inspection involving police, electrical inspectors, MCD officials and BSES representatives found that current was flowing through an iron streetlight pole.However, MCD officials maintained that the electrical panel in question belonged to BSES and was not under civic body jurisdiction.Delhi Police said further action would be taken after the electrical inspection report is completed.Noida engineer’s death<\/span>A 23-year-old engineer’s death in Noida has led to criminal proceedings against the electricity department and renewed scrutiny of infrastructure safety during monsoon rains.Aryan Prajapati died on July 9 in Sector 58 amid heavy rainfall.CCTV footage reportedly showed Aryan walking beside an open drain before collapsing after allegedly receiving a shock from a nearby pole. He then fell into the drain.A colleague who rushed to help him also appeared to receive a shock and was forced to step back.Following outrage from residents and the victim’s family, police registered an FIR against the electricity department.Family members alleged negligence in maintaining electrical infrastructure and demanded accountability.Police said they are investigating how electric current reached the area and whether lapses in maintenance contributed to the incident.Officials have assured the family that strict action would be taken if negligence is established.Ghaziabad schools under high-tension threat<\/span>A recent assessment by the basic education department has revealed that at least 24 government schools in Ghaziabad remain exposed to serious electrical risks.The schools are spread across Loni, Bhojpur, Muradnagar and Rajapur blocks.Major safety concerns identified<\/p>\n
