The Kansas City Chiefs stars are trying to have a trademark lawsuit tied to their 1587 Prime steakhouse dismissed, but the company behind 1587 Sneakers is pushing back.<!-- --> The dispute centers on the \u201c1587\u201d name, which both sides say has different roots and uses. With arguments now filed on both sides, the case has added another layer of attention to the restaurant launched by two of Kansas City\u2019s most recognizable athletes.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"5\"\/><\/p>\n<p><h2>Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce seek dismissal in 1587 Prime lawsuit<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p>The dispute began in February when 1587 Sneakers sued Mahomes, Kelce and others in federal court in New York. The sneaker company argues that the use of \u201c1587\u201d by the Kansas City restaurant could confuse customers and affect its brand.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"10\"\/>The number has a clear connection to the Chiefs stars. 1587 Prime combines Mahomes\u2019 No. 15 with Kelce\u2019s No. 87. The restaurant opened in September 2025 after the players partnered with Noble 33.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"12\"\/>1587 Sneakers, however, says its business predates the restaurant. The company began selling footwear and clothing in 2023 and later sought federal trademark protection for \u201c1587\u201d in the clothing category.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"14\"\/>The restaurant\u2019s trademark application is separate and covers bar and restaurant services. That distinction is now central to the legal dispute.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"18\"\/>The sneaker company wants the restaurant to stop using the 1587 Prime name and seeks damages. It also claims customers have contacted the sneaker brand believing the two businesses are connected.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"20\"\/>Mahomes and Kelce have taken a different position. Their lawyers filed a motion on July 3 asking the court to dismiss the claims against the two athletes with prejudice. <!-- -->Their legal team has argued that the players do not control the restaurant and do not have the necessary connection to New York for the claims to proceed against them there.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"24\"\/><\/p>\n<p><h2>1587 Sneakers pushes back against Mahomes and Kelce<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p>The sneaker company responded on Aug. 4, challenging the attempt to separate Mahomes and Kelce from the restaurant and its branding.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"28\"\/>The filing argues that the athletes were not simply celebrity promoters but played a meaningful role in creating the identity behind 1587 Prime.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"31\"\/>&#8220;Defendants Travis Kelce and Patrick Mahomes seek dismissal by recasting themselves as two distant celebrities that are mere promotional &#8216;pretty faces&#8217; of the alleged infringing enterprise with no New York ties,&#8221; the filing reads. &#8220;The record shows otherwise.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"33\"\/>&#8220;As sufficiently alleged in the operative complaint, both Defendants played an active personal role as the &#8216;moving forces&#8217; of the at-issue mark as &#8216;1587&#8217; was approved and constructed from their respective football jersey numbers: 15 and 87.&#8221;<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"35\"\/>For now, the lawsuit remains unresolved.
