For frogs, toads and salamanders, one of those hidden changes may be happening in the way they eat.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"1\"\/>A new international study on tadpoles of the Iberian spined toad (Bufo spinosus) suggests that as their freshwater habitats warm, young amphibians don\u2019t just grow faster, they also quietly adjust what they eat.<!-- --> It\u2019s a surprising survival strategy, but the research shows it only works up to a point.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"5\"\/><\/p>\n<p><h2>When the water warms, theie diet changes<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p>Amphibians are cold\u2011blooded, like fish and reptiles, which means their body temperature and metabolism are tightly linked to the environment. As temperatures rise, every process in their bodies speeds up: growth, development, energy use, and hunger.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"8\"\/>To see how tadpoles respond, researchers from the University of Lisbon, Queen Mary University of London, NOVA University and Uppsala University collected Iberian spined toad tadpoles from Portugal\u2019s Sintra Mountains and raised them under different temperature and feeding conditions, as per a report by EurekAlert. <!-- -->Then they watched how the animals developed, and what they chose to eat.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"13\"\/>The tadpoles didn\u2019t just passively endure the warming water. They changed their feeding behaviour:<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"15\"\/>&#8211; At cooler temperatures, they ate a higher proportion of animal\u2011based food, which is richer in protein and energy.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"17\"\/>&#8211; At warmer temperatures, they increased their overall feeding rate and shifted toward more plant material, grazing more intensely to keep up with their rising energy demands.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"20\"\/>Lead author Dr. Sara Bento explains that this is the first experimental evidence, in a vertebrate, of tadpoles actively adjusting diet to cope with warming. In other words, amphibians are trying to \u201ceat their way\u201d around climate stress. But the study also shows there are limits to what food can fix.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"22\"\/><\/p>\n<p><h2>Faster growth, but weaker bodies<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p>One of the clearest results was how dramatically temperature changed development speed.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"25\"\/>Tadpoles raised at 20\u00b0C (68\u00b0F) completed their larval stage in around 30 days.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"28\"\/>Tadpoles kept at 12\u00b0C (54\u00b0F) took about 177 days to reach the same stage.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"30\"\/> <\/p>\n<div data-pos=\"0\" class=\"id-r-component iIpbx undefined  &#10;        \">\n<div><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Tadpoles (Representative image)\" msid=\"132492449\" width=\"\" title=\"Tadpoles (Representative image)\" placeholdersrc=\"https:\/\/static.toiimg.com\/photo\/83033472.cms\" imgsize=\"\" resizemode=\"4\" offsetvertical=\"0\" placeholdermsid=\"47529300\" type=\"thumb\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/static.toiimg.com\/photo\/msid-132492449\/tadpoles-representative-image.jpg\" data-api-prerender=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Tadpoles (Representative image)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"33\"\/>Warmer water is like pressing fast\u2011forward on their life cycle. That might sound like an advantage: less time as a vulnerable tadpole, quicker path to becoming a frog or toad. But it comes with a cost.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"35\"\/>The animals that grew up in warmer conditions:<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"37\"\/>&#8211; Emerged smaller.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"39\"\/>&#8211; Were in poorer physical condition than those raised in cooler water.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"41\"\/>Smaller, weaker juveniles are likely to have lower survival chances, reproduce less successfully, and struggle more in harsh environments. <!-- -->So although increased feeding and diet shifts help tadpoles cope with the initial stress of heat, they can\u2019t fully compensate. The body still pays a price.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"45\"\/>The team also found that warming changes the elemental composition of amphibian tissues, which includes the balance of key elements like carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus. That suggests climate change doesn\u2019t just affect how fast animals grow; it alters how they process and store nutrients at a fundamental level.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"48\"\/><\/p>\n<p><h2>A ripple effect through whole food webs<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Pavel Kratina, an aquatic ecologist and co\u2011author of the study, points out that these changes matter far beyond the tadpoles themselves.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"51\"\/>If warmer temperatures alter what cold\u2011blooded animals eat, change their body composition, and shift their size and condition, then the entire food web starts to look different.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"53\"\/>For example:<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"55\"\/>&#8211; Predators that eat amphibians may get less energy per prey, or have to hunt more often to meet their needs.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"58\"\/>&#8211; The shift from animal prey to more plant material by tadpoles can change grazing pressure on algae or plants, affecting water clarity and nutrient cycling.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"60\"\/> <\/p>\n<div data-pos=\"0\" class=\"id-r-component iIpbx undefined  &#10;        \">\n<div><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Salamander (Representative image)\" msid=\"132492458\" width=\"\" title=\"Salamander (Representative image)\" placeholdersrc=\"https:\/\/static.toiimg.com\/photo\/83033472.cms\" imgsize=\"\" resizemode=\"4\" offsetvertical=\"0\" placeholdermsid=\"47529300\" type=\"thumb\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/static.toiimg.com\/photo\/msid-132492458\/salamander-representative-image.jpg\" data-api-prerender=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Salamander (Representative image)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"63\"\/>Other cold\u2011blooded species, like fish, insects, crustaceans, may show similar diet and growth changes, amplifying the effects across ponds, streams and wetlands.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"65\"\/>In this way, a seemingly small adjustment (tadpoles eating more plants as it gets warm) can help explain how global warming gradually reshapes the structure and function of entire aquatic ecosystems.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"68\"\/><\/p>\n<p><h2>A survival strategy with hard limits<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p>One of the most important conclusions from the study is that diet compensation has physiological limits.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"71\"\/>At moderate warming, tadpoles can:<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"73\"\/>&#8211; Eat more.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"75\"\/>&#8211; Shift to different food types.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"77\"\/>&#8211; Partially offset higher energy demands.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"79\"\/>But as temperatures rise further:<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"81\"\/>&#8211; These strategies become progressively less effective.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"83\"\/>&#8211; Development speeds up too much.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"85\"\/>&#8211; Bodies stay small and less robust, no matter how much they eat.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"88\"\/>This is the first experimental evidence in a vertebrate that climate\u2011driven dietary flexibility can only go so far. Beyond certain thermal thresholds, the basic biology of the animal\u2014how its cells function, how quickly it burns energy\u2014outpaces what behaviour can fix.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"90\"\/>That has direct implications for how we think about resilience. Amphibians aren\u2019t passive victims; they\u2019re actively trying to adapt. It benefits the entire community of organisms sharing those waters, from insects to fish to birds that rely on healthy aquatic systems.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"112\"\/>Under climate change, survival won\u2019t hinge on a single magic adaptation.
