They had an indoor backup plan, but a nor\u2019easter brought conditions far worse than expected. Road access to the island was cut off and officials declared a state of emergency, leaving most of their 45 invited guests unable to reach the wedding, according to The Washington Post.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"7\"\/>Laprad and Sink, both 24 and living in Roanoke, Virginia, had already made it to the island. Their vendors, including the musicians, cake provider, officiant and photographer, began cancelling as conditions worsened.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"9\"\/>\u201cIt wasn\u2019t just disappointing,\u201d Sink said. \u201cIt was defeating.\u201d<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"11\"\/><\/p>\n<p><h3><b>The couple invited the whole island<\/b><\/h3>\n<\/p>\n<p>The couple considered chartering a boat to bring their guests across, but abandoned the idea because conditions were too dangerous.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"15\"\/>With their plans collapsing, they considered putting on their wedding clothes and taking photographs themselves.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"17\"\/>\u201cIt would just have been a really expensive photo shoot,\u201d Sink said.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"19\"\/>Then Laprad suggested something unexpected the night before the wedding.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"21\"\/>\u201cLet\u2019s just invite the whole island,\u201d she told Sink.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"23\"\/>The idea started as a joke, but a friend who had reached the island before access was blocked began sharing an invitation in local Facebook groups.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"26\"\/>Within about 20 minutes, hundreds of people said they planned to attend. Dozens also offered food, cake, music and photography.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"28\"\/>\u201cWe thought maybe 20 or 30 people would show up,\u201d Sink said. \u201cWe didn\u2019t think it would go viral.\u201d<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"30\"\/>The couple had originally planned to hold their wedding at the beachfront property they had rented. With hundreds of strangers interested in attending, they needed a bigger venue.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"32\"\/><\/p>\n<p><h3><b>Local residents step in<\/b><\/h3>\n<\/p>\n<p>Stacey Saunders, general manager of Frisco Woods Campground, saw the Facebook post and offered the couple the campground\u2019s 38-acre property and pavilion for free.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"36\"\/>Saunders, who has managed the campground for five years, is also an ordained minister and offered to officiate.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"38\"\/>\u201cI saw their Facebook post, and I was like, \u2018I have the place, I have the means; if they can get to me, I can help them,\u2019\u201d she told the outlet..<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"40\"\/>Restaurants and caterers donated food, people brought several wedding cakes, and three photographers, a DJ and a florist provided their services for free.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"42\"\/>Hatteras Island has about 4,000 year-round residents, but the wedding drew far more people than the couple had expected. <!-- -->Laprad and Sink estimated that between 500 and 800 people attended, while about 460 strangers signed their guest book.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"46\"\/>\u201cTwenty four hours ago, we were all strangers,\u201d Saunders said while officiating. \u201cNow, we\u2019re not.\u201d<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"48\"\/><\/p>\n<p><h3><b>A wedding they never expected<\/b><\/h3>\n<\/p>\n<p>Among the volunteers was Gwenyth Airhart, a professional wedding photographer from Luray, Virginia, who was vacationing on the island. After seeing a Facebook post about the couple, she decided to photograph the wedding.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"52\"\/>\u201cI just felt really bad for their situation, knowing how special a wedding is, and then just these extreme circumstances,\u201d Airhart told the newspaper.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"54\"\/>She called it the most memorable wedding of her five-year career.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"56\"\/>\u201cI loved watching the outpouring of love that these random strangers had for this wonderful young couple,\u201d she said.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"59\"\/>Laprad, who grew up visiting Hatteras with her family, said the community had changed how she viewed the unexpected turn of events.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"62\"\/>\u201cThe people on this island have definitely restored our faith in humanity,\u201d she said.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"64\"\/>The couple still wished their family and original guests could have attended, but said the wedding ultimately became something they would not have experienced otherwise.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"66\"\/>\u201cI think it happened the way it was supposed to,\u201d Laprad said. \u201cWe all had a great time.\u201d<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"68\"\/>\u201cWe made a lot of friends,\u201d Sink said.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"70\"\/>The couple plans to return to Hatteras Island every year for their anniversary.
