The announcement immediately became one of the biggest NHL updates of the week. Alex Ovechkin confirmed that the 2026-27 season will be his final campaign with the Washington Capitals, bringing his 22-year NHL career toward its conclusion. The news also carried significance for the Pittsburgh Penguins, who have shared one of the league’s most recognizable rivalries with Washington throughout the careers of Ovechkin and Evgeni Malkin. For Evgeni Malkin, the announcement prompted an unusual decision. The Pittsburgh Penguins star broke his established routine of not speaking with reporters after morning skates, choosing instead to discuss Ovechkin and what his retirement means for their generation of NHL players.

Evgeni Malkin said Alex Ovechkin’s retirement will be difficult to see because of what the Washington Capitals captain has accomplished for his team and the NHL. Malkin also wished his longtime rival and friend good health during his final season.Malkin’s decision reflected the significance of Ovechkin’s announcement. For roughly two decades, the Pittsburgh Penguins center has generally avoided speaking to reporters following morning skates. Monday’s retirement news was important enough for him to change that routine. The two players have been connected since the 2004 NHL Draft. Ovechkin was selected No. 1 overall by the Washington Capitals, while Malkin went second to the Pittsburgh Penguins. Their careers subsequently developed alongside one another, creating years of memorable regular-season and playoff matchups.Malkin acknowledged that the relationship between the two Russian stars was not always perfect. However, he said past disagreements are behind them and emphasized that they have become good friends who support each other and their families. That evolution adds another dimension to the Penguins-Capitals rivalry. What began with two highly touted Russian prospects being selected first and second in the same draft eventually became a relationship marked by competition, mutual respect and friendship.

The Washington Capitals and Pittsburgh Penguins are scheduled to meet four times during the 2026-27 regular season. Their first meeting comes Wednesday in Washington, making the matchup particularly significant given Ovechkin’s retirement announcement.Malkin said games against Ovechkin have always felt special and acknowledged that the eventual retirement will be a sad moment. The remaining matchups now carry added importance because they represent some of the final opportunities for two players who entered the NHL in the same era to face one another.Malkin also offered an intriguing reflection about his own future. At 40, he acknowledged that this could potentially be his final NHL season as well, although he emphasized that he still loves playing hockey. That uncertainty gives the Penguins-Capitals meetings another storyline to follow throughout the season. The immediate focus, however, remains on Ovechkin. The NHL’s all-time leading goal scorer is entering his final campaign, while Malkin and the Penguins prepare for a season in which every meeting with the Washington Capitals could become part of hockey history.

Alex Ovechkin returned to the Washington Capitals on a one-year contract (Image via Getty Images) The announcement immediately became one of the biggest NHL updates of the week.
