(Israel Defense Forces)<\/span><\/div>\n<\/section>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Israel has honoured an intelligence officer who warned of an impending Hamas invasion before the October 7, 2023 attack, three years after the deadly assault exposed major failures in the country\u2019s military and intelligence apparatus.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"2\"\/>According to a report by The Times of Israel, IDF Chief of Staff Lt Gen Eyal Zamir honoured the Unit 8200 intelligence officer, identified only as Chief Warrant Officer \u201cVav\u201d, during a conference at the Glilot military base examining the lessons of the October 7 disaster.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"4\"\/>The officer had warned senior commanders before the attack that Hamas was preparing to invade Israel, but her concerns were not acted upon.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"6\"\/>The officer, a member of the IDF\u2019s elite Unit 8200 intelligence branch, had raised concerns about Hamas\u2019s preparations for a large-scale assault in the months before October 7.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"10\"\/>According to The Times of Israel, she sent an email to several officers warning that \u201cthe sword is coming\u201d and urged them to take the threat seriously.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"12\"\/>Her warning came after a September 19, 2023 Unit 8200 dossier that reportedly assessed that Hamas was training for a large-scale invasion of Israel. Despite the intelligence, the assessment did not lead to preparations that could have prevented or mitigated the attack.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"15\"\/>Zamir said the IDF must ensure that critical voices are heard and that commanders do not suppress warnings that challenge prevailing assessments.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"17\"\/>\u201cIn our organizational culture, we must not allow a culture of pleasing, intellectual tyranny, or suppression of critical thinking,\u201d he said.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"19\"\/><span class=\"strong\" data-ua-type=\"1\" onclick=\"stpPgtnAndPrvntDefault(event)\">What happened on October 7<\/span><span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"21\"\/>The October 7, 2023 attack began when Hamas-led militants launched a coordinated assault from the Gaza Strip into southern Israel. <!-- -->Fighters breached the heavily fortified Gaza border, attacked Israeli military positions and communities, and took hostages back into Gaza.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"25\"\/>According to Israeli figures, around 1,200 people were killed in the attack, most of them civilians, while around 250 people were taken hostage. The assault became the deadliest attack in Israel\u2019s history and marked the beginning of the ongoing Israel-Hamas war.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"28\"\/>Israel responded by launching a large-scale military campaign in the Gaza Strip with the stated objective of dismantling Hamas and securing the release of the hostages. <!-- -->The ensuing war has resulted in extensive destruction and a major humanitarian crisis in Gaza.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"32\"\/>The attack also triggered intense scrutiny of Israel\u2019s military and intelligence establishment, particularly over how Hamas was able to breach the border and carry out such a large-scale assault despite Israel\u2019s extensive intelligence and surveillance capabilities.<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/timesofindia.indiatimes.com\/world\/middle-east\/3-years-after-oct-7-israel-honours-officer-whose-hamas-attack-warning-was-ignored\/articleshow\/134685745.cms\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Senior IDF officers are seen at a military conference at the Glilot Base, October 4, 2026.
