The work, by Hungarian-born California Impressionist Joseph Kleitsch, was brought to the programme decades later by the daughter of the couple who originally purchased it. In 2014, New York-based art expert Debra Force gave the painting a retail valuation of $500,000. The PBS Antiques Roadshow archive confirms the original purchase, the provenance and the 2014 valuation, while later reporting by Outdoor Painter and Grunge provides additional details about the artwork’s history and what happened to it afterwards.

A $100 painting with an extraordinary history

The painting, dating to around 1925, depicts a scene from Laguna Beach, California, during a period when Kleitsch was documenting the rapidly developing coastal community. It is now identified as The Drugstore, a 40-by-40-inch oil on canvas showing Rankin’s drugstore and other buildings against a landscape of trees. Its journey into the family’s hands was unusually direct. The woman who appeared on Antiques Roadshow explained that her parents knew Kleitsch and his widow. They purchased the painting from the artist’s widow in 1939, eight years after Kleitsch’s death. That provenance became an important part of the painting’s appeal. Instead of an artwork with an uncertain ownership trail, the family could trace it directly back to Kleitsch’s widow. Later accounts also reported that the family retained the original bill of sale, further strengthening its history.

Why Joseph Kleitsch’s work mattered

Kleitsch was born in Hungary and studied art in Budapest, Paris and Munich before coming to the United States. He initially worked largely as a portrait painter, but his artistic direction changed after he moved to Southern California around 1920.Laguna Beach became particularly important to him. His paintings captured the town, its buildings, people and surrounding landscape during a period when it was still a relatively small coastal community. According to the Antiques Roadshow account, Kleitsch was also known for his use of colour and expressive brushwork. His career was relatively short. Kleitsch died suddenly in 1931 at the age of 49, which has contributed to the rarity of his California paintings. Art historians have subsequently regarded him as an important figure in California Impressionism. The subject of this particular work makes it especially interesting. The Drugstore records a piece of early Laguna Beach history, depicting Rankin Drugstore at a time when the area looked dramatically different from the California coastal destination known today. Outdoor Painter reported that the building stood near what was then the unpaved Pacific Coast Highway.

The surprising <keyword id="39734446" type="Denny" weightage="20" keywordseo="Antiques-Roadshow-valuation" source="keywords">Antiques Roadshow valuation</keyword>

When the painting appeared on Antiques Roadshow in New York in 2014, Force examined both the artwork and its provenance. The programme recorded a retail valuation of $500,000. That figure was not an auction result or a confirmed sale price. It represented the expert’s estimate of what the painting could command in a gallery, particularly in California, where Kleitsch’s work had a strong collecting base. The distinction matters because Antiques Roadshow valuations are estimates rather than guaranteed selling prices. The programme itself notes that values can change depending on factors such as condition, market demand and where an object is sold. Still, the difference between the family’s original $100 purchase and the 2014 estimate was striking. The painting had remained with the family for roughly 75 years before its appearance on television.

What happened to the painting afterwards

The story did not end with the television appraisal. Following the episode, interest in the painting increased, and the work eventually changed hands. According to later reporting, John and Patricia Dilks acquired The Drugstore in 2016. The exact sale price was not publicly disclosed, although reports indicate that it sold for more than the $500,000 television valuation. The painting subsequently entered the public eye again through museum exhibitions. It was displayed at the Irvine Museum in 2016 as part of an exhibition of California art and was later included in a 2023 Laguna Art Museum exhibition devoted to Kleitsch’s work. What began as a $100 family purchase in 1939 had therefore become something considerably more significant: not just a valuable painting, but a rare visual record of early Laguna Beach and an important surviving work by an artist whose career ended far too soon.

Source link

A painting bought for just $100 in 1939 turned into one of the more remarkable discoveries featured on PBS’ Antiques Roadshow.
