And he is convinced that he is winning a war of attrition against Ukraine.\u201d<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"12\"\/>The former prime minister warned that the coming winter could be particularly difficult for Ukraine and urged Western countries to apply \u201cpsychological pressure on the Kremlin\u201d by maintaining unity and urgently supplying Kyiv with Patriot missile interceptors.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"15\"\/>Putin, a former KGB officer who turns 74 on Wednesday, has repeatedly said millions of Russians support the war. His ruling party won a record supermajority in elections last month, a result critics said followed a tightly controlled process.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"17\"\/>Kasyanov, who left Russia in 2022 and now lives in exile in Riga, said he remained in contact with members of the Russian ruling elite.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"19\"\/>\u201cFear reigns there &#8212; I am talking about the ruling class,\u201d he was quoted saying.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"22\"\/>\u201cEveryone wants the war to end. An overwhelming majority does&#8221;, he told AFP.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"24\"\/>He said views differed over how the conflict should conclude, with some seeking victory, others wanting Putin\u2019s defeat and some simply wanting the fighting to stop.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"26\"\/>Among ordinary Russians, Kasyanov said he saw \u201cno grounds for a revolt\u201d despite casualties and rising food prices.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"28\"\/>\u201cRussians have lived with high inflation for the past 30 years,\u201d he said. <!-- -->\u201cThey have grown accustomed to putting up with it.\u201d<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"32\"\/>However, he warned that another large-scale mobilisation could trigger street protests.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"34\"\/>Kasyanov, who joined the opposition after being dismissed by Putin, described Russia as \u201cpractically totalitarian\u201d and said there was \u201ca sense of fatalism, hostility toward one another, and serious tension in society\u201d.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"37\"\/>On Putin\u2019s recent warning that Russia could use \u201call types of weapons\u201d if Kaliningrad were attacked, Kasyanov urged Western countries not to be intimidated.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"40\"\/>\u201cThe West&#8217;s and Europeans&#8217; biggest mistake is that they are too afraid of Putin. He is not as strong as he appears,\u201d he said.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"42\"\/>\u201cPutin fears the nuclear button more than many Europeans do.\u201d Kasyanov said he did not believe Putin was preparing for open war with Europe, arguing that Moscow\u2019s objective was to force European countries to acknowledge Russia.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"44\"\/>\u201cWhat Putin wants is respect. He wants to force all of Europe to give it to him,\u201d he said.<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a
