Instead, LeCun says recent incidents in which AI agents hacked company networks and other systems were caused by poor human oversight and badly designed security systems.<!-- --> Speaking about the risks linked to AI agents, Yann LeCun said told Fortune: \u201cThose agents are doing exactly what they\u2019ve been asked to do,\u201d adding that the systems were supposed to operate inside secure sandboxes. \u201cThey were supposed to be in sandboxes, but the sandboxes were leaky and horribly designed,\u201d he said.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"3\"\/><\/p>\n<p><h2>Yann LeCun says AI risks are being exaggerated<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p>Yann LeCun, who shared the 2018 Turing Award with Geoffrey Hinton and Yoshua Bengio for their work on deep learning, said he has \u201czero concerns\u201d about recent rogue AI incidents and is not worried \u201cat all\u201d about AI destroying humanity.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"8\"\/>He said incidents such as an <a href=\"https:\/\/timesofindia.indiatimes.com\/topic\/openai\" styleobj=\"[object Object]\" class=\"\" commonstate=\"[object Object]\" frmappuse=\"1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">OpenAI<\/a> agent autonomously hacking Hugging Face could have been prevented through better system design and oversight. LeCun also argued that some AI labs do not have a strong enough understanding of cybersecurity. He said the risks from AI agents should be addressed through better safeguards rather than broad claims about AI becoming an existential threat.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"13\"\/><\/p>\n<p><h2>Yann LeCun criticises AI safety warnings<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p>During the interaction, Yann LeCun has also criticised the growing focus on AI safety, particularly ideas linked to the effective altruism movement. He called the movement \u201csuper toxic\u201d and a \u201ccomplete disaster.\u201d<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"18\"\/>He also criticised warnings from Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei and OpenAI CEO <a href=\"https:\/\/timesofindia.indiatimes.com\/topic\/sam-altman\" styleobj=\"[object Object]\" class=\"\" commonstate=\"[object Object]\" frmappuse=\"1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sam Altman<\/a> that AI could pose serious risks to humanity. Amodei, LeCun said, is \u201chonest\u201d, but he accused him of supporting policies that could benefit large AI companies by making it harder for smaller competitors and open-source developers to compete.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"22\"\/>\u201cAmodei and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman \u2018saying, \u2018AI can kill us all\u2019 is incredibly destructive for everybody, including for the public who\u2019s scared shitless,\u201d LeCun said.
