The dispute has also raised questions over how much involvement the two players had in creating the restaurant\u2019s identity.<\/p>\n The latest sign of support came through social media. 1587 Prime announced that Yelp had named it one of its Best New Restaurants of 2026. Mahomes and Kelce launched the restaurant with hospitality group Noble 33, using their Chiefs jersey numbers to create \u201c1587.\u201d Mahomes wears No. 15, while Kelce wears No. 87.1587 Sneakers claims that the restaurant\u2019s use of the number infringes its trademark rights. The company says it began selling shoes in April 2023 and later filed for the \u201c1587\u201d trademark. That application remains under review by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.The restaurant\u2019s parent company had already filed for the \u201c1587 Prime\u201d trademark in December 2023. That application covers bar and restaurant services, while the sneaker company\u2019s filing covers clothing.The difference between those categories could become important as the case develops. Trademark attorney Josh Gerben of Gerben IP, who does not represent either side, discussed the dispute with ESPN.\u201cI think it\u2019s a tough case for the sneaker company,\u201d Gerben said while speaking with ESPN about the trademark fight.Gerben also raised the question of consumer confusion, noting that trademarks can exist across different industries. The issue is now part of the wider disagreement between the two businesses.1587 Sneakers claims that customers have contacted the company believing it had a connection to 1587 Prime. The sneaker company wants the restaurant to stop using the name and selling goods carrying it. It has also requested punitive damages.<\/p>\n The legal fight has also focused directly on the two Chiefs stars. Their lawyers asked the court on July 3 to dismiss all claims against Mahomes and Kelce with prejudice.The players\u2019 legal team argues that neither star controls the restaurant and that they lack ties to New York, where the lawsuit was filed. That argument seeks to separate Mahomes and Kelce from the business beyond their public association with the brand.1587 Sneakers has strongly disputed that position. In its August 4 response, the company argued that Mahomes and Kelce played an active role in creating the \u201c1587\u201d identity because the number comes from their football jersey numbers.The filing called the players \u201cthe generative force from which the infringing mark derives its entire identity and market appeal.\u201dThe sneaker company also accused the two players of trying to present themselves as little more than promotional figures for the restaurant. Its filing argued that their involvement went beyond simply lending their names to the business.The players have sought dismissal, while 1587 Sneakers wants the claims to continue. The court has not issued a final ruling on the underlying trademark allegations.Currently, 1587 Prime continues operating and Mahomes and Kelce continue promoting the restaurant.
