The American Petroleum Institute describes diesel as a key fuel for trucks, trains, ships, farming and construction, while noting that demand tends to remain relatively steady even when prices increase.The International Energy Agency said in its September 2026 Oil Market Report that diesel and gasoil exports from the Gulf and Russia were down by 1.6 million barrels per day in August compared with February, while global refining capacity remained under pressure.Reuters reported that the shift towards lighter crude grades in Asia during the Iran war reduced the production of middle distillates because those crude grades generally yield less diesel and jet fuel.This combination of high economic dependence, relatively inflexible demand and limited flexibility in refining output
