About two hours after takeoff, it began losing altitude rapidly and turned sharply north, according to flight-tracking data. The aircraft descended 17,400 feet in just under two minutes before issuing a distress call at 8.31 am (local time).It then squawked code 7500, the International Civil Aviation Organization code used to indicate a hijacking, as passengers described chaotic scenes on board.Terror attack or suicide attempt?<\/span>The motive behind the attack remains unclear, with questions over whether the alleged attacker intended to carry out a terror attack or was attempting suicide. US President Donald Trump told reporters at the White House that he and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu discussed the incident \u201cat length\u201d over the phone. Trump said the co-pilot \u201cwas perhaps a terrorist or perhaps a whack job.\u201dThe UAE prosecutor general has ordered an investigation into the circumstances and motives behind the incident, including whether it was linked to militant activity or involved prior planning or direction. The Israeli Foreign Ministry described the incident to diplomats as an attempted terrorist attack aimed at undermining ties between Israel and the UAE.Who was the attacker?<\/span>The attacker was identified as an Omani national serving as the co-pilot of the Flydubai flight. His identity and background remained unclear as investigators worked to establish what happened. The UAE prosecutor general has ordered an investigation into the incident.UAE judicial authorities have jurisdiction because the aircraft is registered in the UAE and operates under its flag. The UAE said its law applies to crimes committed on board \u201ceven if they occur outside the country’s territory\u201d. Netanyahu said he spoke with UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, who agreed Israel would participate in the interrogation of the suspect.The attacker was being investigated in Saudi Arabia, with Netanyahu saying he believed the suspect would later be taken to the UAE.Was Iran involved in the attack?<\/span>Whether Iran had any role in the incident also remained unanswered.
