It can represent security, responsibility, sacrifice or family duty. If someone grows up hearing that good money management means saving, avoiding waste and putting family needs first, those lessons can remain influential long after the person starts earning independently. Researchers have described these learned beliefs about money as money scripts, often unconscious beliefs that people develop about what money means and how it should be handled. A 2023 review found evidence of gender differences in some money attitudes, while also noting that findings about actual financial behaviour are more complex and cannot be reduced to a simple male-versus-female pattern.

Women can feel uneasy about spending even when they can afford it

The discomfort around spending can exist alongside financial independence. A woman may have her own salary, savings and investments and still question whether a personal purchase is justified. Research among Indian women also suggests that financial attitudes and socialisation can influence financial behaviour. A 2026 study of 403 working Indian women aged 25 to 55 examined financial attitude, parental financial socialisation and investment behaviour. The researchers found associations between financial attitudes and aspects of parental financial socialisation and women’s investment behaviour.Another 2026 study involving 284 working women in Delhi-NCR examined financial literacy, financial socialisation, financial coping behaviour and self-efficacy. The researchers found relationships between these factors and financial behaviour among the women studied. These studies do not show that women who feel guilty about buying things for themselves have a particular psychological problem. They point instead to the role that financial knowledge, family experiences, beliefs and confidence can play in financial decision-making.

Sometimes the problem is not spending

Consider two women with the same income and the same savings. One thinks, “I budgeted for this, so I can buy it.” The other thinks, “I can afford it, but there are so many other things I could spend this on.” The difference may not simply be financial knowledge. It may be the meaning attached to spending. Research on women’s money attitudes has found that anxiety, saving, spending and planning can coexist in complicated ways. A study of women in Nashik, for example, examined financial attitudes through factors including anxiety, precautionary saving, free spending, financial interest and planning.

What women can ask themselves

Before cancelling a purchase out of guilt, it can help to ask: Is this actually unaffordable, or does it only feel unnecessary because it is for me? Am I sacrificing a genuine financial need, or simply feeling uncomfortable about being the beneficiary of my own money? These questions do not make every purchase sensible. They simply create some distance between a financial decision and an automatic feeling of guilt. A woman can save for her family, contribute to the household and plan for the future while also spending a reasonable amount on herself.

Source link

A woman earns her own money, pays her bills on time and may even have enough savings.
