In 1991, the former Spurs star promised fifth-graders at Gates Elementary School a $2,000 college scholarship if they finished high school and attended college. Ten years later, that commitment had grown into Carver Academy, backed by $9 million from Robinson\u2019s foundation to create and sustain a school for children in underserved areas of San Antonio.Robinson\u2019s focus on education also came from his own family. His parents placed a strong emphasis on learning despite having limited educational opportunities themselves, and Robinson later saw how that decision changed the direction of his family. He went on to graduate from the U.S. Naval Academy with a degree in mathematics before becoming the No. 1 pick in the 1987 NBA Draft.<\/p>\n The Gates Elementary programme began with 94 fifth-graders. Robinson promised each student $2,000 if they completed high school and went on to college, turning a visit to a local school into a commitment that would last for years.Robinson kept track of the students after making the pledge. In 1998, he returned to Gates Elementary for a graduation ceremony, where 50 of the students had completed the programme. He increased the scholarship to $8,000 for every student who received a diploma, giving the graduates four times the amount he had originally promised.The experience became part of a larger philanthropic effort. Robinson and his wife, Valerie, established the David Robinson Foundation, which supported children and families while placing education among its major areas of work.Robinson\u2019s interest was not limited to helping students pay for college. He wanted to create opportunities much earlier in a child\u2019s education, particularly in parts of San Antonio where families had fewer resources.His own family experience helped shape that thinking. Robinson has spoken about watching education change his family within two generations, after his parents made higher education a priority for their children.\u201cI saw the difference in our family. I saw what education did in just two generations,\u201d Robinson said in a Belmont University interview.That experience eventually pushed his foundation toward a larger project. Instead of helping students one scholarship at a time, Robinson wanted to create a school where children could receive educational support every day.<\/p>\n Robinson spent years developing the idea before Carver Academy opened in 2001. The David Robinson Foundation committed $9 million to create and sustain the independent pre-K through eighth-grade school on San Antonio\u2019s East Side.The school opened while Robinson was still playing for the Spurs. His NBA career gave him the financial resources to make the investment, but building a school required a different kind of involvement. Robinson had to learn about fundraising, education, curriculum and the demands of running a school.\u201cWhen I started Carver, I did not know what I was doing,\u201d Robinson later said. \u201cIt is a huge undertaking.\u201dCarver Academy was created as an independent school serving children in an underserved part of San Antonio. Robinson saw education as a way to give students an opportunity that could continue long after they left the school.\u201cYou can talk until you are blue in the face, but you can\u2019t change people,\u201d Robinson said. \u201cBut you can plant seeds, and education is a natural way to plant seeds.\u201dThe project changed significantly in 2012, when Robinson partnered with IDEA Public Schools. Carver became part of the tuition-free public charter network, allowing the school to operate within a larger education system and reach more students.That transition gave Robinson\u2019s original idea a much wider reach. What started as a private school supported by his foundation became part of a public charter network serving students from kindergarten through high school.<\/p>\n The education mission continued after Carver joined IDEA. Robinson remained involved with students and later helped create the David Robinson Fellowship, which added financial assistance, mentoring and leadership development to the work.The fellowship selected 10 IDEA Carver students and received a $192,000 contribution to support the programme. The financial aid could help with college tuition, textbooks, living expenses and other education costs, while students also received mentoring and leadership training.Robinson wanted the students to develop their own goals rather than simply follow his path into professional sports.\u201cI don\u2019t want them to be like me,\u201d Robinson said. \u201cThey have a unique mission in their life, a unique calling, and our job is to help them find that passion, find that calling.\u201dThe fellowship added another stage to an education project that had already changed significantly since Robinson first visited Gates Elementary. His initial promise involved 94 fifth-graders and $2,000 scholarships. Seven years later, 50 students had graduated and Robinson had increased the award to $8,000. In 2000, his foundation committed $9 million to Carver Academy, which opened the following year.The 2012 partnership with IDEA then moved Carver into a larger tuition-free public charter network, while the later fellowship extended Robinson\u2019s support into college preparation and financial aid. The work has therefore developed from a promise made to a group of fifth-graders into a long-term education effort covering schools, scholarships, mentoring and leadership programmes.Robinson\u2019s basketball career gave him the platform and resources to build that work, but his reason for choosing education began much earlier. His parents made learning a priority in their home, and he saw the opportunities that decision created for their children. He later used his success in San Antonio to give students in the city access to similar opportunities.More than three decades after the Gates Elementary pledge, the figures show how far the original idea travelled: 94 fifth-graders, scholarships that grew from $2,000 to $8,000, a $9 million school commitment and a later fellowship backed by $192,000.
