(Photo: NPS)<\/span><\/div>\n<\/section>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Cleaning up litter may be one of the less glamorous parts of working as a national park ranger, but at Yellowstone National Park, the job is particularly important because trash can pose a serious threat to the park\u2019s geothermal features.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"2\"\/>With more than 4.5 million visitors each year, Yellowstone rangers regularly remove litter from some of the park\u2019s most popular areas, including Old Faithful and Midway Geyser Basin. While food wrappers, tissues and water bottles are among the common items found, strong winds can also send visitors\u2019 belongings into the park\u2019s hydrothermal features.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"4\"\/>According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), Yellowstone\u2019s geology team has removed more than 20,100 pieces of trash from geothermal areas so far in 2026. <!-- -->They have also collected more than 5,000 rocks and sticks and, surprisingly, 280 visitor hats.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"9\"\/><\/p>\n<div data-pos=\"0\" class=\"id-r-component iIpbx undefined  &#10;        \">\n<div><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"More than 280 visitor hats were collected across Yellowstone in 2026.\" msid=\"134523336\" imgsize=\"150140\" resizemode=\"4\" width=\"\" title=\"More than 280 visitor hats were collected across Yellowstone in 2026. (Photo: NPS)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"11\"\/>\u201cNo matter the type of debris, it needs to be removed,\u201d the USGS said, explaining that foreign material can damage or permanently alter hydrothermal features by clogging water supplies, blocking or diverting runoff channels, or introducing chemicals and sediment.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"13\"\/>Among the hundreds of hats recovered this year are a FIFA 2026 Men\u2019s World Cup hat, a baseball cap labelled \u201cCOWBOY HAT\u201d and a Roblox bucket hat from St. Kitts and Nevis.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"17\"\/>After the 2026 season ends, hats that can be reused will reportedly be washed and donated to local organisations.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"19\"\/><\/p>\n<p><h2>Yellowstone\u2019s hot springs are not wishing wells<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<div data-pos=\"0\" class=\"id-r-component iIpbx undefined  &#10;        \">\n<div><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Rangers urge visitors to stash their trash while exploring Yellowstone.\" msid=\"134523343\" imgsize=\"149488\" resizemode=\"4\" width=\"\" title=\"Rangers urge visitors to stash their trash while exploring Yellowstone. (Photo: NPS)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"22\"\/>Coins are another recurring problem for Yellowstone\u2019s geothermal areas.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"24\"\/>\u201cContrary to (apparently) popular belief, hot springs are not wishing wells!\u201d the USGS warned.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"26\"\/>The agency explained that coins can clog hydrothermal vents and harm bacterial and algal formations, with resulting damage potentially taking months or even years to recover.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"29\"\/>As of September 2026, Yellowstone staff had collected more than $18 in coins. (Photo: NPS)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"36\"\/>The park\u2019s geology team has also recovered a surprising assortment of everyday objects this year.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"38\"\/>Some of the most frequently found items include 54 camera lens caps, 47 hair ties, 42 pencils, 36 pairs of sunglasses, 20 hotel key cards and 17 baby pacifiers.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"41\"\/>Some discoveries were considerably stranger. Among the items listed by the USGS were AirPods, golf tees, an inhaler, six Invisalign retainers, 15 fake nails, floss picks and a lump of glittery slime believed to be a children&#8217;s toy.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"43\"\/>Other children&#8217;s toys have also ended up in the park, including miniature figures, bouncy balls, fidget spinners and rubber ducks.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"45\"\/>The USGS also highlighted some of the staff\u2019s favourite discoveries, including seven Polaroid photographs. <!-- -->Several of the photographs reportedly depicted the very hydrothermal features where they were found.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"49\"\/>Yellowstone souvenir pennies and Pokemon cards were also among the more unusual items recovered.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"51\"\/><\/p>\n<p><h2>Why removing trash from geothermal areas matters<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p>The litter cleanup is not simply about keeping Yellowstone looking pristine. The park\u2019s hydrothermal features are delicate, and introducing foreign objects can interfere with their natural processes.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"55\"\/>The USGS said Yellowstone\u2019s Geology Program staff, who are trained in safely navigating hydrothermal areas, carry out much of the removal work. <!-- -->Alongside collecting trash and other debris, they monitor chemical and temperature conditions, assess hydrothermal incidents and educate visitors.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"59\"\/>Visitors are encouraged to \u201cstash their trash\u201d by keeping wrappers, paper and other lightweight items securely inside pockets or bags, or disposing of them in trash cans.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"61\"\/>And for those visiting Yellowstone\u2019s windy geothermal areas, the USGS has one final piece of advice: \u201cIf you\u2019re adventuring in a windy area, consider tightening or taking off your hat.\u201d<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/timesofindia.indiatimes.com\/world\/us\/yellowstone-rangers-remove-20100-pieces-of-trash-from-geothermal-areas-in-2026-including-more-than-5000-rocks-and-sticks-280-visitor-hats-and-over-18-in-coins\/articleshow\/134523257.cms\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Yellowstone rangers uncover 20,100 pieces of trash in geothermal areas.
