A fawning Trump repeatedly described Xi as a friend and the relationship as a \u201cgreat friendship,\u201d with little personal reciprocity from the Chinese leader.The charitable explanation for what many critics said was Trump\u2019s folding before Xi and muting his demands from and tirades against China was purportedly in the service of American farmers \u2013 his major voting bloc \u2013 who are getting screwed because Beijing cut down purchase of soy, corn, and other farm produce. In brief remarks during a tea ceremony, the MAGA supremo mentioned that the visit had yielded \u201cgreat results\u201d for American farmers without elaborating, but spoke of little else other than accepting Xi\u2019s invitation to visit China.By most accounts, the summit produced a lot of optics, but little else, amid a cascade of criticism that Trump is placating China rather than confronting it over its actions inimical to US, including its tacit support for Iran. The most withering censure came from Republican Senator John Kennedy of Louisiana, who likened Xi and leaders of Russia, North Korea and Iran, to reptiles. “The chief reptile, the quarterback, is President Xi. They all lie like timeshare salesmen. You can\u2019t trust them. I wouldn\u2019t turn my back on any of them, even if I thought and knew they were two days dead,\u201d Kennedy told a TV show during the visit. Even Senator Chuck Grassley, the Iowa Republican whose state is deeply dependent on agricultural exports, was sceptical about the outcome of the visit, saying that if extending the trade truce was all that emerged, the summit risked becoming a \u201cshow job” for a communist autocrat.On Taiwan, the most sensitive strategic issue between the two sides, there was no public breakthrough. Trump has continued to hold in abeyance a roughly $14 billion Taiwan weapons package that he described earlier this year as a negotiating chip with Beijing. China wants the arms sales halted; US lawmakers across party lines have urged their release.Nor were there any signs of a significant Chinese concession on Iran. Beijing has expressed interest in peace and stability but remains economically intertwined with Tehran. On advanced chips, Washington also appeared to hold its line, despite Beijing\u2019s interest in easing US technology restrictions. That may ultimately prove more consequential than the ceremonial theatrics. The summit thus produced no obvious quid pro quo in which China would use its leverage over Iran in return for a major American concession.Trump\u2019s defenders argued though that the president\u2019s approach should be judged against what they described as decades of failed China policy under previous administrations. \u201cObama and Biden talked tough, but gave away American factories to the Chinese. Trump actually launched a trade war against China,\u201d noted Brian Kilmeade on Fox News, pointing out that Trump “kicked the Chinese out of Panama Canal” and went after their \u201cfavourite oil proxies in our hemisphere, Venezuela and Iran, and is about to kick them out of Cuba.\u201dThat in essence is the larger contradiction of the summit. Trump has not abandoned confrontation with China; he has instead recast it as transactional management between two superpowers, much to the consternation of other nations like India, Japan, and South Korea. Xi, for his part, repeatedly spoke not of friendship between two men but of China and the US as \u201ctwo major countries\u201d with a responsibility to find a new way of coexisting.The symbolism was perhaps captured most neatly by the contrasting tours offered during the two leaders\u2019 encounters. When Trump visited Beijing in May, Xi showed him ancient trees at Zhongnanhai, including specimens more than 1,000 years old \u2014 a quiet display of Chinese historical depth and long-term continuity.
