They rebuilt several of its key structures and extensively renovated the rest. According to reports from the Los Angeles Times, Coldwell Banker Global Luxury and Yahoo Sports, the property was eventually sold for about $55.1 million in 2021, which was far above Norman’s original $4.9 million purchase price. The sale marked the end of a long, highly personal real-estate project.

Finding Tranquility in 1991

Greg Norman was already a major name in professional golf when he purchased the Jupiter Island property. The Australian golfer had become one of the sport’s most recognisable figures, known for his powerful game, distinctive white clothing and nickname, “The Great White Shark.”By 1991, he had also spent years travelling internationally for tournaments. A private waterfront property offered more than luxury. It provided a place to retreat from public life, store boats, entertain friends and create a home base in Florida. The estate stood on approximately 8.3 acres and stretched from the Atlantic Ocean to the Intracoastal Waterway. That unusual layout gave the property water frontage on both sides. The Los Angeles Times reported that the estate had about 370 feet of Intracoastal frontage and 172 feet along the ocean.Norman paid $4.9 million for the property. At the time, it was already one of the original ocean-to-Intracoastal estates on Jupiter Island. Its combination of privacy, water access and scale made it valuable, but Norman and his wife eventually saw the potential to make it more closely reflect their lifestyle.

A compound rather than a single house

Tranquility was not simply a large mansion. It was a collection of buildings spread across the estate, each serving a different purpose. The compound included a main house, coach house, pool house, tennis house, boat house, carriage house, beach house and orchid house. Together, the buildings contained nearly 32,000 square feet of living and recreational space, according to the Los Angeles Times and Coldwell Banker Global Luxury. This arrangement allowed the property to function almost like a private resort. Guests could stay in separate residences, while family members could enjoy their own spaces. Recreation, fitness, boating, entertaining and relaxation could all happen without leaving the estate. The design also took advantage of the property’s unusual geography. The main residence sat closer to the Intracoastal side, while the beach house faced the Atlantic. Residents could move between calm inland water and open ocean, giving the property two very different coastal experiences. For Norman, the estate also connected with his Australian background and love of boating. It was not designed as a formal showplace alone. It was intended to be used.

Rebuilding the vision

Norman and Kiki did not merely redecorate the existing property. They rebuilt several of its most important structures.Coldwell Banker Global Luxury reported that the couple completely rebuilt the main house, pool house and beach house, while extensively renovating the other areas of the estate. The rebuilding process allowed them to create a more cohesive compound. The main house was opened up to bring in more natural light and improve views of the coast. Large expanses of glass connected indoor spaces with the water and tropical landscape.Kiki Norman, a hospitality design expert and founder of Norman Design Group, played a central role in shaping the property. Her design approach combined comfort and luxury instead of making the compound feel overly formal. She described the desired atmosphere as “barefoot elegance”, a place that could accommodate high-end entertaining while still feeling relaxed. The goal was to create a sanctuary and a permanent holiday setting for friends and family. That philosophy influenced the choice of materials, colours and layouts. The interiors drew inspiration from the couple’s travels, classic American style and the work of French architect Christian Liaigre.

What the estate offered

The scale of Tranquility was reflected in its amenities. The main house included two wine cellars, each capable of holding about 1,900 bottles. It also contained a movie theatre, trophy room, gallery, wraparound bar and elevator. Walls of glass opened the living areas towards the water views. The pool area included two pools: a 14-foot pool with a diving board and a smaller plunge pool with a spa. The pool house added covered and open terraces, creating spaces for relaxing outdoors throughout the year.A large carriage house provided additional bedrooms along with a gym, cardio room and equipment room. The tennis house was positioned beside a full-size court surrounded by hedges and included a bar and several entertaining areas. The boathouse reflected Norman’s interest in life on the water. The Intracoastal dock could accommodate a yacht of up to 150 feet, according to Coldwell Banker Global Luxury. There was also a generator house with a dog kennel, a detail that revealed how carefully the compound had been designed for practical everyday living rather than appearances alone.

A property shaped by water

Water was the defining feature of Tranquility. Many luxury homes offer either ocean frontage or access to a protected waterway. Norman’s estate provided both. The Atlantic side brought wide coastal views, sea breezes and direct beach access. The Intracoastal side offered calmer waters and a substantial dock. That dual orientation influenced both the architecture and the lifestyle of the property. The beach house could serve as a separate oceanfront retreat, while the main house and other structures looked towards the quieter Intracoastal setting. The property also benefited from a nature preserve across the waterway, contributing to its privacy and leafy surroundings. Rather than facing a dense wall of neighbouring construction, parts of the estate looked across at protected natural space. The combination was rare even within an exclusive area such as Jupiter Island. It gave the compound the feeling of a private coastal village, with each building connected to the wider landscape.

Listing the estate for sale

Norman first placed the estate on the market in 2008, asking $65 million. The property was later relisted and had its price reduced before being withdrawn from the market, according to the Los Angeles Times. The decision to remove the property from sale allowed the Normans to pursue a different strategy. Rather than continuing to market an older compound, they undertook a major rebuilding and renovation project. After the transformation, the estate returned to the market in 2021 with an asking price of $59.9 million. The new listing presented Tranquility as a complete, carefully designed compound rather than simply a large waterfront residence. The relaunch also reflected the work invested in the property. The rebuilt homes, updated amenities, improved interiors and extensive grounds created a finished estate designed for buyers seeking privacy and space. The listing came at a time when luxury buyers were increasingly interested in private properties that could accommodate family, guests, recreation and remote living in one location.

The $55.1 million sale

The property did not sell at its full $59.9 million asking price, but it still achieved a remarkable result. Yahoo Sports reported that the estate sold for approximately $55.1 million, with the sale recorded at about $55.095 million. The transaction was completed in April 2021. Reports identified members of the Wexner family, including L Brands chairman emeritus Les Wexner, as the buyers.Compared with Norman’s original $4.9 million purchase price, the sale represented a dramatic increase in value. However, the difference cannot be understood simply as a passive rise in property prices. The estate had been extensively rebuilt, renovated and expanded over three decades. The final price reflected not only its location but also the investment in architecture, landscaping, amenities, privacy and construction. Norman and Kiki had effectively turned an existing waterfront estate into a highly customised compound. The sale also ended a 30-year chapter in the property’s history. What began as a private purchase by a celebrated golfer had become one of the most distinctive luxury estates on Florida’s coast.

Life after Jupiter Island

The Normans continued to own property in Florida after selling Tranquility. Yahoo Sports reported that they purchased a residence in the Old Palm Golf Club community in Palm Beach Gardens for approximately $12.2 million shortly after the Jupiter Island sale. The new home was smaller than Tranquility but still included extensive amenities, including a tennis court, guest house and resort-style pool. The move suggested that the sale was not an exit from Florida but a change in scale and lifestyle. After decades of maintaining a large waterfront compound, a more compact home may have offered privacy and luxury with less responsibility.Norman’s real-estate decisions also took place alongside his continuing business interests. After his golf career, he developed brands connected with golf, wine, clothing and food, while remaining involved in golf-course design and entrepreneurship.

More than a luxury sale

The sale of Tranquility is striking because of its numbers: a $4.9 million purchase, an 8.3-acre site, nearly 32,000 square feet of buildings and a final sale price of about $55.1 million. But the property’s story is also about design and personal identity. Norman did not buy a finished mansion and simply occupy it. He reshaped the estate over many years, working with Kiki Norman to create a place that reflected boating, travel, hospitality and outdoor living. The result was a property built around experiences rather than just rooms. Guests could arrive by boat, relax beside the water, play tennis, watch a film, enjoy a meal outdoors or walk from the main compound to the beach. That is what made Tranquility different from an ordinary celebrity home. It was designed as a complete environment—a private coastal retreat that combined privacy with the scale of a resort. After three decades, the estate passed to a new owner at a price more than 11 times Norman’s original purchase figure. Yet the financial gain tells only part of the story. The larger achievement was the transformation of a 1991 purchase into a deeply personal, fully realised Florida compound.

Source link

When Greg Norman bought an 8.3-acre estate on Florida’s Jupiter Island in 1991, the property already offered something difficult to find: privacy, direct access to the Atlantic Ocean and the Intracoastal Waterway, and enough space for boats, guests and family life.
