The seven-time Super Bowl champion built an NFL career that few could have predicted when he entered the league as the 199th overall pick in 2000. Now, the former quarterback has a message for parents who want to see their children succeed. Brady believes shielding kids from failure could hold them back, and he is putting that belief into practice while raising his three children.<\/p>\n Last year, Tom Brady shared his views during a conversation with Fortune editor-in-chief Alyson Shontell at the Fortune Global Forum in New York. He questioned a parenting trend that, in his view, allows children to avoid challenges instead of learning how to overcome them.\u201cThink of today\u2019s world, how we screw these kids up,\u201d Brady told Fortune editor-in-chief Alyson Shontell. \u201cEvery time they mess up, we send them to an easier place to succeed.\u201dFor Brady, the problem goes beyond sports. When children face competition or struggle to meet expectations, moving them to an easier environment may offer short-term relief. But it can also take away the chance to develop patience, resilience and confidence.His own journey offers a clear example. Brady spent his high school years working to earn the starting quarterback role, rather than expecting it to come easily. He believes those demanding experiences helped shape the player he became.\u201cWe\u2019ve all faced different challenges in life; we\u2019ve all faced our own adversities,\u201d he said. \u201cLook at the hardest things that have ever happened. We look back at those and realize they\u2019re the best things that could\u2019ve happened.\u201dBrady also credited the challenges he faced before reaching the NFL for helping him build a career that spanned 23 seasons.<\/p>\n Brady’s parenting philosophy is rooted in the support he received from his own parents. They encouraged him to pursue football, even when success seemed far from certain, without pushing him towards an easier alternative.\u201cThe blessing my parents gave: When I was that long-shot as a kid who was a backup quarterback, they never said, man, don\u2019t do that, it\u2019ll be too hard, think about another backup plan,\u201d Brady said. \u201cThey said, go for it\u2014that\u2019s probably my parenting style.\u201dThat approach also reflects Brady’s views on leadership. During his playing career, he wanted teammates to push beyond their limits, stay humble after victories and remain eager to learn from mistakes.For Brady, helping children succeed does not mean removing every obstacle. It means giving them the support to face difficulties, learn from disappointment and keep going.
