After the baby’s bath, gently press and squeeze the little nose, keep doing it every day, and the child will grow up with a sharp, pointed nose instead of a flat one. The habit has been passed from grandmothers to mothers for years, and it got fresh attention in a reel where a woman said her own mom taught her exactly this. The clip shows fingers pinching a newborn’s nose right after a bath, and the caption promises a pointed nose in return. A doctor watched it, smiled, and asked the obvious question: can you really reshape a baby’s nose by constant manipulation? His answer was short and honest. Realistically, he said, it’s not going to work.

10 Sept 2026 | 12:19

What’s one thing you swore you’l never do as a parent now you find yourself doing?

Why the idea sounds believable

The reel was posted from the Instagram ID, drlee with the caption “It’s a common practice in Korean culture, but does it really work?”Sitting in his clinic in scrubs and a surgical cap, the doctor asked his audience, “Can you reshape a baby’s nose by constant manipulation?” He said that he knows a lot of people who do it, pinching the nose with their fingers just the way the reel shows. He even pinched his own nose to demonstrate, then said, “Realistically of course it’s not gonna work.” Then he agreed that there is a real theory behind reshaping the body with pressure. It’s easy to see why such advice spreads: it’s gentle, it costs nothing, and it comes from someone you trust. The best example is the skull. According to the doctor, some babies are born with a misshapen skull, and for them doctors do use a helmet to guide the skull into a better shape. The catch, he explained, is that this treatment needs constant pressure, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, for months on end. When it’s done that way, he said, it works very well.

Two reasons the nose is different

The first reason is plain and practical. A helmet can stay on a baby’s head around the clock. Fingers can’t. Nobody is going to squeeze a tiny nose 24 hours a day for many months, and a quick pinch after a bath is nowhere near the kind of steady pressure that helmet treatment depends on.The second reason has to do with what a nose is made of. According to the doctor, the shape of a baby’s nose isn’t really about the width of the cartilage. It’s about the cartilage being soft. And that softness doesn’t fade as the child grows. He said it stays soft throughout life. So there’s no stage where the nose firms up on its own and locks in a new shape, and no amount of gentle pressing changes that basic fact.Put the two points side by side and the gap is easy to see. The skull is treated with pressure that never lets up. The nose would need the same, and it still wouldn’t hold, because soft cartilage has nothing firm inside it to remember the shape.

What it really takes to change a nose

This is where rhinoplasty comes in. The doctor explained that reshaping a nose through surgery involves stiffening up those cartilages, making them firmer so they can actually hold a new shape. Soft cartilage doesn’t stay put just because someone has pressed it into a different position. That’s why, in his words, pressure to remold the cartilage of the nose is not going to work. If you truly want to change the structure, you have to strengthen it with additional cartilage. In simple terms, pressing something soft doesn’t make it firm. The firmness has to be added. All of this brings him back to the tip in the reel. Manipulation by your fingers, he repeated, isn’t going to work. He wrapped up with a small “sorry,” a light nod to every parent and grandparent who has sworn by the habit for years.

Source link

Ask around in almost any family and you may hear the same piece of home wisdom.
