The world No.<!-- --> 1 can return in Asia, where he has already experienced problems in difficult conditions, or wait for the indoor season and build towards the ATP Finals in Turin. Either route carries a cost, with Alexander Zverev waiting for an opportunity.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"3\"\/><\/p>\n<p><h2>Sinner&#8217;s comeback could be delayed until Vienna<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"5\"\/>Sinner&#8217;s last appearance came at Wimbledon on July 12, when he won the title, and more than two months have now passed without another competitive match.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"7\"\/>The Italian was forced to withdraw from the 2026 US Open before the tournament because of a right knee issue, which had also kept him out of the preceding North American hard-court events in Montreal and Cincinnati. <!-- -->It was the first Grand Slam tournament Sinner had missed since making his Flushing Meadows debut in 2019.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"12\"\/>His eventual return therefore remains uncertain, and former ATP professional Stefano Pescosolido believes Sinner could choose to miss the Asian swing altogether rather than immediately expose himself to the heat and humidity of Beijing and Shanghai.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"14\"\/>\u201cI think he&#8217;s a little more careful from a physical standpoint. He wants to avoid relapses,\u201d Pescosolido told <span class=\"em\" data-ua-type=\"1\" onclick=\"stpPgtnAndPrvntDefault(event)\">Tuttosport<\/span>.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"19\"\/>\u201cThe Slams are his main goal, and I imagine he wants to be at his best next year to try to win as many as possible. There are two options: Beijing and Shanghai, or starting with the indoor tournaments.\u201d<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"21\"\/><span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"23\"\/>The concern is not simply the knee problem that forced Sinner out of the US Open.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"25\"\/>Sinner has a documented history of struggling physically in hot conditions, including at the Australian Open over the past two years and at European events, while his most dramatic episode came at the French Open this year.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"28\"\/>Sinner was leading Juan Manuel Cerundolo and was one game away from victory in their second-round match at Roland Garros when he suffered severe cramps and a complete loss of energy, leaving him unable to mount a meaningful response.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"30\"\/>That collapse came after Sinner had played all five Masters 1000 tournaments in the build-up to Paris, with the accumulated workload becoming part of the discussion around his physical condition.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"33\"\/>China has presented similar problems.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"35\"\/>At the Shanghai Masters last year, Sinner struggled with the humidity and eventually retired during his match against Tallon Griekspoor, despite that contest being played in a night session.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"37\"\/>Pescosolido therefore believes the indoor season could offer a more controlled route back.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"39\"\/>\u201cLast year, at the ATP 1000 tournament in China, the conditions were difficult and he withdrew due to cramps,\u201d Pescosolido said. <!-- -->\u201cHe could skip the Asian trip and return from Vienna, to be ready for the ATP Finals, in order to best plan for the following year.\u201d<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"43\"\/>That would put the Erste Bank Open in Vienna at the centre of Sinner&#8217;s potential comeback.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"45\"\/>The ATP 500 indoor hard-court tournament is scheduled for October 26 to November 1, 2026, at Vienna&#8217;s Wiener Stadthalle, and Sinner has a particularly strong connection with the event after winning the title in 2023 and 2025.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"48\"\/>Returning indoors would also remove the heat and humidity that have contributed to some of his recent physical difficulties, while giving him competitive matches before the season-ending championship in Turin.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"50\"\/><\/p>\n<p><h2>Skipping China could put Sinner&#8217;s No. 1 ranking under pressure<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"52\"\/>The problem with protecting his body is that Sinner&#8217;s ranking does not stop moving simply because he is not playing.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"54\"\/>He has already qualified for the 2026 Nitto ATP Finals, which will be held at the Inalpi Arena in Turin from November 15 to November 22, but the Italian will have to consider what happens to his ranking if he remains away from the Asian tournaments.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"57\"\/>Sinner is the defending champion in Beijing, meaning that if he chooses not to play there, he would lose 500 ranking points. (Christoph Reichwein\/dpa via AP)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"61\"\/>Zverev has relatively few points to defend from last year&#8217;s Asian swing and could therefore make up further ground by going deep in Shanghai, particularly given the form he has shown after winning two Grand Slam titles this year.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"64\"\/>The German also has points to defend later in the indoor season, having reached the Vienna final and the Paris Masters semi-finals last year, but a strong Asian swing would still give him an opportunity to close the gap before Sinner returns.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"66\"\/>That creates a difficult calculation for Sinner.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"68\"\/>Playing in Beijing and Shanghai would allow him to defend ranking points and prevent Zverev from gaining ground, but it would also mean returning from a knee problem in the same type of hot and humid conditions that have previously caused him physical difficulties.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"71\"\/>Waiting until Vienna would give him an indoor environment and more time to prepare, but it would leave Zverev with an extended opportunity to challenge his position at the top of the rankings.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"73\"\/><\/p>\n<p><h2>Turin is the target Sinner has to protect<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"75\"\/>The wider objective is the Nitto ATP Finals, where Sinner will defend his title in front of his home crowd.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"77\"\/>The tournament brings together the top eight singles players and top eight doubles teams at the end of the ATP season, with this year&#8217;s edition scheduled for November 15-22 in Turin.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"80\"\/>Sinner&#8217;s indoor record makes a return through Vienna particularly attractive if he decides that avoiding Asia is the better option. He has won 10 titles from 12 indoor finals, including his two Vienna championships, giving him a strong competitive base on which to rebuild his rhythm before Turin.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"83\"\/>The timing also allows Sinner to think beyond the final weeks of 2026.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"85\"\/>There is, however, a reason Sinner may find the decision difficult even beyond the rankings.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"88\"\/>He has won two titles in Beijing and one in Shanghai during his career, meaning the Asian swing has been a productive part of his schedule rather than an unwanted detour. Skipping both tournaments would therefore mean giving up opportunities to compete in places where he has already enjoyed significant success.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"90\"\/>For now, the choice is between returning sooner in conditions that have previously tested him physically or waiting for the indoor courts of Vienna, where he has already proved himself twice.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"92\"\/>Either way, Sinner&#8217;s next tournament will carry more weight than a routine return from injury, because the world No. 1 is trying to protect both his body and his position at the top before the season reaches its final stretch in Turin.<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/timesofindia.indiatimes.com\/sports\/tennis\/why-world-no-1-sinner-cannot-afford-to-skip-the-asian-swing-despite-his-injury-especially-after-us-open-withdrawal\/articleshow\/134391686.cms\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>FILE &#8211; Jannik Sinner, of Italy, celebrates a point against Alexander Zverev, of Germany, in the men&#8217;s singles final at Wimbledon Tennis Championships in London, July 12, 2026.
