Family, friends and fellow service members gathered in Epworth Methodist Church to lay Lancaster to rest on Friday. \u201cRight now, oddly enough, I\u2019m feeling relief,\u201d Lancaster\u2019s nephew Jerry Brown said, as per a report by WITN. \u201cThe road has come to an end, and Marvin will be here. That\u2019s where he belongs, with his brothers and his parents and his grandparents.\u201dHe arrived in a flag-draped casket, carried by airmen and Marines young enough to be his great-grandchildren, and when they laid him down, the younger brother Lancaster last knew as a 2-year-old boy hobbled over on a cane and dropped a carnation in a tribute. \u201cLong time coming,\u201d said his brother Ted, his beard gone white.In 1942, Lancaster was only 24 when his fighter plane, a P-40F Warhawk, went down over Egypt in the early months of World War II, attacked by German fighters midair. British forces recovered only the remains of an unidentified pilot, eventually burying them in Tunisia among other nameless fighters.Lancaster left a family of 15 brothers and sisters on a tenant farm back in tiny Vanceboro, home to only about 800 people then. Before, during and after the war, his paychecks pulled the family through rural poverty and gave him an almost mythical status among his younger brothers and sisters. Two of his nephews \u2014 Jack and Jerry Brown \u2014 grew up admiring the uncle they knew only from pictures, a ghost grinning at them in a flight suit. Jack Brown flew missions for the Marines over Vietnam; Jerry for the Navy during the Yom Kippur War of 1973, which brought him within 70 miles of his uncle\u2019s crash site.<\/p>\n More than 70,000 Americans remain missing from World War II, and for decades, Brown pressed for answers that wouldn\u2019t come. He found his uncle\u2019s name on the wall at the US cemetery in Tunisia, and because so few soldiers there remained unidentified, he figured he must be among them. He collected Lancaster\u2019s after-action report and even spoke to German pilots who fought there on the same day. But by 2014, he had largely given up the hunt. One year later, the Defence POW\/MIA Accounting Agency started up, merging a tangle of government offices that didn\u2019t always work together well, and nine years later the Brown family got the long-awaited call about a DNA match.His remains went unidentified for more than 80 years, until his family received answers in December 2025.\u201cThat\u2019s why he\u2019s here,\u201d Brown said Friday. \u201cThe magic of DNA and the persistence of a data analyst stuck in the bowels of an office who wanted to take a name off a wall.\u201d \u201cWhen the casket came off the aeroplane, and they invited us to touch it, it was such a powerful emotion,\u201d Jerry Brown said.Jack Brown was inspired by his uncle’s story to become a fighter pilot in the Marine Corps. \u201cThis is just such a special, emotional time to honour a good and courageous man and a nice American,\u201d Jack Brown said.Jack Brown rose to speak and noted that their family might not have grown so large and successful if not for the Army checks that came home to Vanceboro until 1949, seven years after his father, Augustus, received his son\u2019s belongings in a box. \u201cA man\u2019s worth at the end of his life cannot be summed up in an inventory of his personal effects,\u201d Brown said. \u201cWe have only to look around us, and we\u2019re seeing family we haven\u2019t seen for years, second and third generations I\u2019ve only heard about. Largely because of my uncle\u2019s support after his death. … What a fine and good man he was.\u201dLancaster’s funeral fell on National POW MIA Recognition Day, which honours those who, like Lancaster for decades, have yet to make it home.
