Patil, 41, contested from the Stockholm City constituency and will represent the Green Party in the 349 seat house.

A political family, a European career

Patil was born in Sweden but spent her early years in Ahmednagar, the Maharashtra town her family has been linked to for generations. She is the great-granddaughter of Vithalrao Vikhe Patil, who set up Asia’s first cooperative sugar factory, and the granddaughter of the late Union minister Balasaheb Vikhe Patil. Her father chairs the Vikhe Patil Foundation, which runs a large chain of educational institutions across Maharashtra. Despite these roots in Indian politics and education, Patil built her entire career abroad, spending close to two and a half decades navigating Swedish academia and public office.

Education across two countries

Patil completed her Bachelor’s degree and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) at the Gothenburg School of Business, specialising in Economics and Law. She went on to pursue a second MBA at the University Complutense in Madrid. That grounding in law, economics and management would go on to define the portfolios she later handled in Swedish public life, most of which centred on finance, taxation and housing.

Two decades inside the Green Party

Patil’s association with Sweden’s Green Party stretches back 25 years, making her one of the more seasoned figures in a party that has just helped hand Sweden’s opposition a narrow parliamentary majority. She has served on the boards of the Swedish Young Greens, Green Party Gothenburg and Green Students of Sweden, and currently sits on the executive committee of Green Party Stockholm as well as its Election Committee. Her candidacy this year follows years of organisational work inside the party rather than a sudden entry into electoral politics.

From the Prime Minister’s office to PwC

Patil’s career includes a stint inside the Swedish government. She served as a political adviser in the Swedish Prime Minister’s office during the administration of Stefan Löfven, handling finance, taxation and housing, the same areas her education had prepared her for. She also served as a member of the Stockholm Municipal Council, giving her direct experience of civic governance before she entered national politics. Since 2020, she has worked at PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), the global professional services network, advising on strategy and management.

A narrow win for the opposition

Patil’s election is part of a wider shift in Swedish politics. The Swedish Election Authority confirmed that the opposition bloc, made up of four parties including the Green Party, won 176 of the 349 seats in the Riksdag, edging past the 173 seats held by the parties that made up the outgoing conservative-led government. The Green Party’s focus on environmentalism and renewable energy sits alongside Patil’s own background in economics and finance.Patil has previously spoken about her ties to her family’s roots in India. “I hope to make my grandfather proud,” she said, recalling that Balasaheb Vikhe Patil made her read the state budget when she was fifteen. Her father said he felt proud of her achievement, a line that connects a family attached to education and public service in Maharashtra for three generations to a parliament in another country altogether.

Source link

Nila Vikhe Patil, daughter of Maharashtra educationist Ashok Vikhe Patil and niece of Maharashtra minister Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil, has been elected to the Swedish Parliament, known as the Riksdag.
