For most people, retirement comes with a card, a cake or perhaps a watch to mark the occasion. For Pat Lightizer, it came with something far more fitting: a typeface with her name on it. According to an online report by The Boston Globe, after 53 years at Monotype, Lightizer retired last month at 70. She ended a career that began when fonts were created by hand and concluded in an era when thousands of typefaces can be accessed digitally in seconds. To celebrate her remarkable tenure, her colleagues created the Lightizer font as a surprise retirement gift, states the report. Scroll down to read about her journey and the kind gesture.<\/p>\n

From drawing boards to digital type<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n

According to the report, Lightizer joined the company’s type division straight out of high school at age 18. At the time, the business was known as Compugraphic Corp. and was based in Wilmington, Massachusetts. In those days, the world of typography looked very different and designers drew individual letters by hand on drawing boards. Lightizer’s job involved testing the finished work to see how fonts appeared once they had been set. She never expected the position to become a lifelong career. Over the next five decades, the company changed names and ownership, and the technology behind type underwent a dramatic transformation, but Lightizer was always a part of the system. Monotype eventually became one of the world’s major owners and distributors of fonts, claims the online report. In 2019, private equity firm HGGC acquired the publicly traded company for $825 million.<\/p>\n

A retirement surprise in type<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n

The Lightizer typeface was intended to be a closely guarded secret, states the report. There was one problem: Lightizer accidentally caught an early glimpse of the project when the font file was sent to her so she could upload it ahead of its public launch. As per the report, she kept the discovery to herself, allowing her colleagues to preserve the surprise. The moment became more meaningful when the font finally appeared on Monotype’s website alongside familiar typefaces such as Helvetica and Times New Roman.<\/p>\n

A career that never went unnoticed<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n

Lightizer had been considering retirement for about five years, although the decision took longer than expected, informs the report. As per the report, her career also gave her a front-row seat to the evolution of typography. The process of watching a designer’s sketch become a finished typeface and eventually reach the public remained a source of fascination throughout her years at Monotype. Her retirement marks the end of an unusually long professional journey, but the work she helped shepherd through the company will continue to appear wherever its fonts are used.
