<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\nEarl Spencer, Princess Diana\u2019s brother, has doubled down on his claim regarding an alleged phone call with her ex-husband, King Charles, shortly after her death in 1997.“I can tell you here and now, those are exactly the words he (Charles) said. I was hyper alert to what he was saying,” Spencer told BBC in an exclusive interview. He was responding to Buckingham Palace’s statement that the King was “mindful that the pain of fraternal grief can cloud reason, affect judgement and colour memory in ways others do not recognise, even many years after such a loss.““Well, is he furious? Is he furious or is he embarrassed?” the 62-year-old, who shares his first name with Charles, added.Spencer further stated that he and the King have only ever had two calls.Buckingham Palace declined to give a response to his fresh comments.<\/p>\n In excerpts of his upcoming memoir, “Swan Song: Diana, My Sister,” Earl Spencer claims the-then Prince of Wales made a startling remark during a heated argument over whether their sons, Princes William and Harry, should join their mother’s funeral procession.According to Spencer, the exchange occurred after he insisted his late sister would not have wanted her young sons to walk behind her coffin. In a subsequent BBC interview detailing the confrontation, he recalled that the future King “went ballistic” and “ranted for a while,” accusing Diana’s family of lacking a proper sense of duty.“And then he stopped and I thought, oh now, now he’s gonna pull himself together and say something more appropriate,” Spencer recalled.“And then, he said, ‘we’ll forget her soon enough.”“Stunned into a momentary silence,” Spencer claimed he responded flatly, “I cannot believe you just said that,” before hanging up.The forthcoming book\u2014expected to offer a sharp critique of the Royal Family\u2014also detailed earlier conversations between the two men following Diana’s fatal car crash in Paris on August 31, 1997.Charles and Diana were married in July 1981.
