In a quiet but decisive win for conservation, a 1,950-acre tract of South Carolina forest that once faced the threat of development has been permanently protected as part of Sumter National Forest. The Nature Conservancy purchased the land in 2023, held it while paperwork and funding were finalised, and has now transferred it to the US Forest Service, ensuring the upland hardwoods, wetlands and streams near Joanna in Laurens County remain open to the public for generations. The move, reported by multiple local outlets, adds a significant new block of protected habitat to the Enoree Ranger District and shields the area from the southward creep of development along the I-26 corridor.A landscape saved just in time<\/span>The newly protected acreage sits in Laurens County, directly adjoining the unincorporated community of Joanna and bordering land that Laurens County is turning into an equestrian park. The property includes large stands of upland hardwood forest, pockets of wetlands and a network of streams that drain into the Enoree River, a tributary of the broader Saluda basin. These habitats support white-tailed deer, wild turkey, songbirds and a range of amphibians and reptiles that depend on intact forest and clean water.Officials with The Nature Conservancy say the purchase was driven by urgency as much as opportunity. As development continues to move south along the I-26 corridor, natural spaces in the Upstate are increasingly under pressure from new housing, commercial projects and infrastructure. The conservancy\u2019s team moved quickly to take the property off the real estate market and managed it until the transfer to the Forest Service could be finalised, preventing the land from being subdivided or sold to private developers.How the deal came together<\/span>The 1,950-acre transfer traces back to a larger 2,281-acre purchase by The Nature Conservancy in 2023, acquired for about 6.47 million dollars according to local reporting. From that original tract, Laurens County bought a 335-acre parcel in late 2024 with plans to develop an equestrian park that will connect to the Palmetto Trail and Sumter National Forest. The remaining acreage has now been handed over to the US Forest Service to become part of the national forest system.The transaction builds on earlier conservation wins in the same area. In 2025, The Nature Conservancy helped secure the largest conservation easement in Laurens County history at Creekwood Farms, protecting another 2,000-acre tract next to Sumter National Forest through a donated easement valued at 2 million dollars. Together, these deals create a growing mosaic of protected lands that link public forest, county parks and privately held conservation easements into a larger network of open space.What the addition means for Sumter National Forest<\/span>Sumter National Forest is already a major public resource in the Upstate, with more than 170,000 acres spread across Newberry, Union, Chester, Laurens and Fairfield counties as part of the Enoree Ranger District. The new 1,950-acre block extends the forest further into Laurens County and strengthens its presence near Joanna, a community that has watched growth inch closer in recent years. Once the US Forest Service formally incorporates the property into the national forest system, it will be opened for public access under the same rules that govern the rest of Sumter.The land will be co-managed for wildlife by the US Forest Service and the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources under the state\u2019s Wildlife Management Area program. That designation keeps the area open for public hunting and fishing, while also supporting hiking, birding and other low-impact recreation. Forest supervisors say they plan to improve public access over time, adding trails and parking areas that connect the new acreage to existing routes in the Enoree Ranger District.Why permanent protection matters<\/span>Turning the property into part of a national forest does more than keep trees standing. It locks in long-term protections that make it far harder for the land to be sold off, subdivided or converted to other uses. National forest status also brings federal resources for habitat management, invasive species control and trail maintenance, helping ensure the forest remains healthy and accessible.For local residents, the addition offers a tangible buffer against sprawl. As new housing and commercial development push outward from Greenville, Spartanburg and other growing cities, protected forests provide breathing room, cleaner water and places for people to escape into nature without driving for hours. The contiguous block of forest also helps wildlife move across the landscape, reducing the fragmentation that can isolate populations and weaken ecosystems.A model for future conservation in South Carolina<\/span>The Joanna-area deal fits into a broader push to expand protected lands across the state. It supports South Carolina\u2019s Ten Million Acres Initiative, launched by Governor Henry McMaster in 2024, which aims to conserve millions of acres of forests, wetlands and working lands through partnerships with nonprofits, agencies and private landowners. Similar efforts are underway in other parts of the state, including a recent 1,700-acre acquisition along the I-95 corridor that will eventually become a state-owned forest in the Lowcountry.Conservation groups and public agencies say the Sumter expansion shows how strategic purchases, easements and transfers can work together to protect large, connected landscapes before development reaches them. By acting early and holding land until permanent protections are in place, organisations like The Nature Conservancy can give public agencies time to secure funding and complete the legal steps needed to add new areas to national forests and state parks.For now, the most visible result is simple. Nearly 2,000 acres of South Carolina forest that might have become subdivisions or strip malls will instead remain forest, open to the public and permanently part of Sumter National Forest.<\/div>\n
