Around the world, ultra-wealthy individuals and institutions are pouring massive fortunes into projects designed to heal the planet. One of them is Lucinda Southworth, wife of Google co-founder Larry Page<\/a>, a Stanford-trained scientist and one of the most prolific backers of high-tech ocean conservation. Her organisation, Oceankind, is one of the private funding networks for marine science and ecological innovation. It has been reported that the marine-saving powerhouse has donated over $120 million since it was founded in 2018.<\/p>\n

What Oceankind targets and finances<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n

Oceankind focuses its financial muscle on marine health and the economic well-being of communities dependent on the sea. According to the website, the group\u2019s operations include conservation, climate-ocean solutions and intersecting environmental priorities, backed through two core strategies: standard policy-advocacy grants and a dedicated Labs Initiative financing early-stage conservation technology.\u201cOur team leverages experience in innovation and environmental philanthropy to promote the development of policies, organisations, and technologies that can scale to help solve the enormous challenges facing the ocean. Of the many issues affecting the marine environment today, we believe that climate change, overfishing, habitat loss, and pollution are the most significant,\u201d it says.According to a 2022 report by TechCrunch, the organisation has donated over $120 million in hidden grants. Notably, as the initiative does not list exact award figures, its financial scale has emerged strictly through investigative reporting by the publication, and since the data is until May 2022, it is highly likely that Oceankind has already poured more than $121 million into environmental programs.
